  1. Yes I'm starting to think that too. I've since asked 3 other mechanics including two that have seen it (one of which is a tuning specialist) who all say there is no way the oil pump could have any bearing on my problem so phew. I might get it done as a matter of course down the line and of course if it fails I will report back but it seems it may be fine after this. Thanks for sharing your experience Thomas, are you BPU?
  2. I've done most of that list so probably as good as I can get for a while.... Famous last words...
  3. So as an update, the mechanic stripped it all down and found the FMS hadnt blown but it was as old as time itself and harder than a maths test from Carol Vorderman. So we potentially have a traditional seal failure. It had only lost a litre of oil but managed to decorate its underside with it. He's tested the pump and pressure is normal too. i'm thinking of having it done anyway though to be honest, it will be far from perfect and will likely just be the next thing to go in the next year or two anyway. Just been ringing round and getting the price to tumble under a grand now and I would pay that for piece of mind. Obviously I cant go to 1.2bar until I know my oil pump is tickety boo. As a side post when I was going BPU I did a ton of research, and I mean a ton. At no point did anyone say 'get your oil pump done or you'll spray Castrol all over the county'. With this in mind are there any other things which really should be done in addition to the normal BPU advice to stop the world around my car going either black, smokey or on fire?
  4. Cheers Scooter I will see what the mechanic has done when it comes back and kid gloves it whilst I figure out what to do. Sorry Swampy I dont know what I'm talking about on fitting times, I just went on Toyota who said it was a one dayer but maybe they have a team of umpa lumpas all in a line with buckets or something to speed it up.....
  5. Oh right its a NA/T conversion. Only reason I ask is we were following him in one of our other cars tonight and he floored it and it smelt really bad of burning oil, I mean it filled our car behind him with the smell of burning castrol. I thought if he was on here he would like to know something is worryingly wrong somewhere. DOnt want him to be stood on a roadside somewhere as I have been before....
  6. Anyone own the blue Supra in Louth Lincolnshire it's a 93.
  7. Cheers Frank I've PM'd Swampy and am waiting to hear back
  8. Not yet but where is he based is it a case of leaving the car with him all day to bang a pump in? If he's good and reasonable I'll do it for piece of mind as I've spent so much on my Supe already it's well worth it - - - Updated - - - Not yet but where is he based is it a case of leaving the car with him all day to bang a pump in? 9. Not at all I had the receipt for the boost block, it was put on a couple of weeks before I bought it and removed a day or two after so not used particularly at 1.5bar. Why the last owner thought it was a good idea I dont know. I had the turbos checked after and had a full service after and there's been a thousand or more miles since then. Its defo valve seal or BPU related.
  10. Yer, boost block removal was one of the first things I did mate, stupid idiot owniong it before me thought that was a good idea
  11. Hi Ric So you've gone the same route as me, all seals but not an oil pump? So we're both in the same boat of fingers crossed I guess? Are we feeling lucky......
  12. I have quite a lot of history and the car is 85k miles so not a high miler. It did sit in storage apparently for 3 years and then someone ran it for a few months, obviously got worried by the valve seal failure causing clouds of smoke and thought it was on its way out and sold it. Since then I've had so much work done on it including full suspension, starter motor and battery, tyres, brake discs, pads, lines, fully restoring underneath, full aircon rebuild, new radiator and full water flush and any water hoses changing, obviously valve seals soooooo much money spent on it, then I put a simple BPU on it and this happens. Devastating to be honest. I'm just waiting on the FMS Ok, I see what people are saying on the oil pump but and in my opinion its a big but, big enough to rival Kim Kardashian, I would wager most people when going BPU DONT have their valve seals and therefore all seals disturbing at the same time. I would guess they go BPU and then either the pump and seals manage or they dont. Because mine were all out and the FMS was inadvertently the only thing not renewed, I would still say its way more likely to just be that seal. As I say I understand when they are just in situ and fail it smells of pump but when they're interfered with and one not replaced it surely is more likely to just be FMS in my case yes? - - - Updated - - - Also I have had experience of 1JZ. Head gasket, boom.
  13. Sorry but what is 'Blow By'?
  14. Yer my mechanic isnt keen as I say so I thought I would just ask Toyota to get another option if I choose to do this, looks like I need a decent local mechanic which would I guess be half that price. I am right in assuming that the FMS job being done now, it wouldnt actually reduce the labour of the oil pump fitting to do it at the same time, the two dont seem related in any way mechanic wise. If not I'll get the FMS done and fully tested then see how I go. I'm so far from being an expert I cant even see where the line for them starts but something tells me this seal will actually resolve it. But of course we can all enjoy a new thread if and when it doesnt of well deserved told you sos... If I can find someone to do it if I supply the part for 6-700 I'd do it without a thought but £1700+ is just cookoo bananas.
  15. That is interesting indeed and of course pumps can go after 50k or last 250k it seems from my research and this forum, so its whether your pump and seals can stand BPU or not. And as a side chuckle I rang the local Toyota dealer who would be delighted to supply and fit for the reasonable sum of £1719. A snip then...... The part is £272 nowadays if anyone else is in the same boat
  16. Excuse my ignorance but what is WOT? Also lets say somehow I can convince my mechanic to fit an oil pump what kind of outlay is that financially. Hey I know its cheaper than an engine if it were the issue but has anyone had one done at a mechanic and what kind of spicy meatball pricetag does it come with?
  17. This is what baffles me Scooter. I had no oil warnings, the car has only done 85k despite its age not 135k+ like most Supes. And it had valve seal issues since I bought it and smoked on startup. Do you think its more likely that fixing the valve seals at BPU simply removed an easy 'pressure release' for the oil and then the only old seal remaining (the FMS) blew, all of which would indicate an oil pump which wasnt in fact faulty, and if anything in fine condition to produce all this pressure? I'm talking out of my hat here (I often do) but that makes more sense than going bpu to only just under 1 bar and the oil pump suddenly going pop and attacking the FMS within 50 miles surely? And also wont an oil pressure test at various loads when rebuilt confirm the pumps health in situ?
  18. What kind of costs would it be for an oil pump fitted in everybody's experience?
  19. Yes kind of a fait accompli anyway as its in his garage in pieces and would have to be a trailer job to move elsewhere for a pump. Worth a couple of hundred quid of labour hopefully sorting it and if not I guess its one of those things. Just out of interest I've heard form a couple of people who had the seal go and then had to do the pump, are there people out there who had this leak, replaced the seal and it was fine after without the pump needing to be done?
  20. I'm going to have to give it one try on the seal to see if the pump is fine as my current mechanic is well aware of what the oil pump change entails and as a BMW specialist (my other car is a 535D) he says its not something he wants to do so it will be a case of finding someone in Lincolnshire or the area willing to do it. Hopefully the seal will be fine and was 25 years old after all. As all the other seals were changed and this was just missed due to me not doing enough research beforehand on the stem seals it was the only old seal in there and hopefully just the weakest link in the chain. Its been a nightmare year for me and my Supe, been in the garage for over 10 weeks out of this year so far with upgrades and repairs! Argh! But, when you stand outside of the garage bonnet up with your car pissing oil and waiting for the turbo timer to cut it out and a little boy comes up to you and says 'that is one heck of a nice looking car' it all seems worth it somehow.....
  21. So quick update: The mechanic stripped the car down, took a lot of the top end off and thinks its the crank seal as many people on here are saying (thanks guys) or MFS as its sometimes called. As with so many Supe parts he has had to get one from overseas but while we're waitign for that at the end of this week he rebuilt it well enough to strike up and when not under load it now isnt leaking, but obviously it still could do under tub pressure. With this in mind I have a couple of questions for you all, one once this is done will my BPU car be reliable at 1.2 or will this keep going (obviously I will keep an eye both under the bonnet and on temp and fluid levels). mine is one of the first Mk IVs from 93 and I specifically wanted the first model but that therefore makes it the oldest of course. It seems all the other seals in the area are done but BPU puts pressure on and I wondered if it was wise to dial it down to 1 bar or whether it will stand 1.2? At 1 bar its pretty darn quick to be honest but I have a 500 quid Boost controller to take it that last mile yet to install and I'm now wondering whether to not do that or stick with the full BPU program. Anyone out there had similar experience with some sage advice? The second point is apparently according to the mechanics Supras can have their oil pump 'let go' which causes similar symptoms. According to what I am told this is an engine out seriously expensive problem, and there's an outside chance my issues could be this. Anyone had this happen and what were the symptoms and repair process? Oh and Dnk cheers, new cambelt is being fitted too, good call.
  22. I think the very oddest part of it is the smoke pluming from the back isnt exhaust in my opinion, as I say its the entire width of the car. This to me indicates a seal near the top end has gone, oil is getting onto hot parts of engine and exhaust and causing this 'wall of smoke', its the only thing that makes sense to me. if it were turbos I would think it would affect the performance in some way but it isnt doing. But after a very short drive even though the temp gauge hadnt particularly risen I could hear bubbling under the bonnet, from oil or water I dont know, I would guess water but I have a temp indicating radiator cap and it was only showing about 100 so possibly oil bubbling through the seal somewhere. I took it straight back to the mechanic of course so its frustratingly out of my hands and I wont know anything until he tells me whats what but surely it cant be turbo seals when there's a clear main mass of oil around the rocker cover?
  23. I know people are saying turbos but yes, its pretty obviously leaking form the rocker cover to my eye, and has just splashed elsewhere, I guess that indicates crank seal/cam seal?
  24. Cheers RIC yes it looks like the oil has hit the belts and sprayed from that area. Guess new seals and start again is the order of the day.
