They're damaged from the spun bearing apparently and need replacing, they need replacing and I cant find stock, these are 'plug and play' apparently and work with all the normal parts of the engine, does that sound right? Also because of the bore damage its being bored out to plus one and having new forged pistons put in as well as a replacement crank, does that sound like a good way forward? I guess it will now be a 3.05litre or something..... Its TCB whose recommended this and people on here said they were the beans for a supplier but as I cant get new cams anyway do I have a choice?

Hi All So I am struggling to find used or new camshafts anywhere for my rebuild, the best deal I have is over 500 quid on a set of stage 2 Brian Crower cams. Is there any gain to having these street cams whatsoever? I dont seem to have a choice as Toyota have discontinued theres and used ones are like rocking horse poo.

My bore is scored after years of some idiot storing it and then running it without a service. I thought if I just got a new bore it would be job done as the engineering firm sorting it are taking forever to get to mine
-
Sounds like it's a no go then cheers
-
I'm talking about just the part if the block with the actual bores in are they they same? Sorry if I wasn't clear
-
Hi all Is the actual block on a GE the same as a GTE ie are they interchangable? In the middle of a rebuild and can get a GE block easy but will it fit my 93 TT line a glove? Also are non and VVTI blocks the same?
-
Hi All Does the TT and the NA have the same Water Pump? Thought it might be worth me changing the water pump whilst my engine is being rebuilt, its one of the few ancillary parts I've not yet done?
-
Dont worry chaps its going in, I want a reliable Supe after this and once I have prices I'm going back to the mechanic to converse with him over it. He's no stranger to the engine either so at least I'm in experienced hands it seems.
-
Hi Just to confirm I have no interest in actually buying this, but its more a case of the info on the listing is stating there's more than one. I would always actually buy one from a reputatable source unless its new anyway. I've already rung TCB and am waiting on their prices.

Here's an ebay listing stating Supra 97 onwards but not pre 97, you can see my consternation. I know you guys will know more than me. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CRANKSHAFT-WITH-BEARINGS-TOYOTA-2JZ-GE-DOHC-FOR-SUPRA-CHASER-MARK-II-CROWN-3-0L/192561539619?hash=item2cd58fea23:g:U7sAAOSw4A5Yvl5N

Just looking around for crank options can anyone confirm if the crank ever had a revision or is there literally only one 2JZ crank ever produced? I've found one in the UK and it seems to state its for 98-02 but not pre that?
-
Its the one at the right end but might be usefully off shot. I saw the piece underneath which I assume is a journal and it was just like all the others to my eye. If you see on the other journals that little mark in the middle, thats where its slightly bumpy. I looked for a crank on ebay but no luck.

Your wish is my command I took a couple of pics whilst I was in the garage. Hope its of interest. Dont want you to think I'm a 'crank caller'...... Booo.....
-
I just spoke to him and he said he's seen the engineering outfit this afternoon and the crank doesnt need machining but thanks for the heads up!
-
It's good news to have some options Chris. The crank has the tiniest issue it's a fraction of a mm that needs machining the main work will be done in the bores fortunately. I'm hoping it'll be like a new block after this. Anyone doubting the black death should have seen it though it was everywhere and sounds like it needs several processes to fully remove.
-
Only other part that need machining other than the bore is the smaller thinner parts of the crank that have a small amount of rust too, once its been done if the new forged pistons can be made to match it should be bulletproof. He says with his fingers crossed. All the other problem areas are going to be replaced with the rebuild anyway
-
Ok as an update the whole engine is disassembled and it is full of the BD but the problem (caused by BD) is it spun a bearing on the crank and small pieces of it went all over the engine. This can obviously be sorted out, it needs new cams too but the main problem is the pistons have a small rusting on them so it needs a rebore and slightly larger forged pistons dropping in. Anyone had this done? Obviously it will then have larger cylinders but are pistons for this job available easily? There's the same scoring marks on the crank too but that is being machined too, then all cleaned piece by piece, reassembled with new piston rings and all new consumables and bobs your uncle hopefully, just wondering if these forged pistons are available does anyone know?

I know Scooter, I know. I live in Lincolnshire and finding a mechanic is hard, not only to work on a Supra, but in general, they all have 2 or 3 week waiting lists seemingly so I tend to find a window and rush the car in and forget to take pics for the forums advice or have the opportunity to ask advice on next steps and unfortunately present a coup de grace to you all. I guess I'm more asking for any with relevant experience and whether they came to the same conclusions I did and costs etc. In truth I never dreamt I would have needed so much work on what is touted as a stunningly reliable car and it keeps taking me by surprise how long the path is to make it reliable. But its better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb then half way up one you dont want to and I'll keep at it. Hopefully after this my problems will be tiny and wont involve me having no access to the car for weeks and months on end. Its done less than 100 miles this year!

Sorry Tricky just re-read my reply and it sounded like it was saying better men than you for opinions, I of course meant better men than me. I am so inept at mechanical wizardy it is staggering. I sometimes wonder which door to get in to be honest.
-
43 cars owned Tricky not 43 engines replaced mate I'm glad people on here have experienced it and Chris still does which along with all the mechanics made me feel better about the diagnosis. No offence to you at all Tricky just going on what better trained people tell me and tell me in numbers. And it's easy to see how I got it after near five years of storage then some idiot buying it and dragging it for a year before selling it to me. How many engines have I had replaced? Two MR2s, a Supra Mk 3, Mondeo, two Prelude VTECs, BMW 3 series 3l and most amusingly a Metro (hey dont judge I loved that little car).
-
Yes Chris I tend to agree, it almost always is better the devil you know. I've had 43 cars in 21 years of driving, and every time a new engine went in, the car was worse in my experience. Ok I am going to go rebuild on my unit and I'll let you all know what was the root cause when its a huge 3d jigsaw.
-
So would we all agree that buying a recon engine would probably be a false economy considering I'm keeping the car for as long as possible?
-
So we know its BD from three mechanics so lets not dispute that. A rebuild would have been done at the first mechanic had they not refused to do any more than valve seals, and the second. I checked with the second mechanics just now on the phone and the pump was primed (I dont have to take their word for it they have onsite CCTV and have actually offered to show me the whole fitting if I want). So it isnt that but the pump seems to have caused it. Now its a matter of letting the third mechanic actually strip it down and go from there I'll keep you informed as I suspect others out there will have BD and not even know as it seems to be a very misunderstood situation and one that most thought ended decades ago.
-
Hi Chris, yes all the belt off tests were done, oil pressures etc and all thats fine. I believe you are in the rebuild game, what sort of figure would you think this will run to? Would it take a month? I've just had the original mechanic tell me it could well take this long so its looking accurate to me but anyone had this done and what did it cost?
-
Hi Scooter, cheers, eventually I will crack this. So are people thinking about 5k for the rebuild with BD? I am preparing myself for this anyway so might be lower or more. I agree if engines were a grand, slam a new one in, but they arent and lets be honest, most available will be little better than the one failing on a 25 year old car. And yes, both mechanics told me it had this and it wouldliely do damage, both told me the only way to cure it was a rebuild and full clean, and both said whats the point when to solve it is the same process as to let it fail all but a tiny amount of extra cost on the odd bit failing itself. And just to remind everyone, both mechanics flat out refused to do any more than valve seals in one case or oil pump in another. if they'd said yes it needs a rebuild lets do it I would have gone ofr it then but it wasnt an option. And yes, I did get it before prices went cuckoo so at least once its done it will only be about what a bad one now is to buy assuming its no more than 5k? Anyone have a mint GTE in their back pocket for a grand
