  1. Hi all, Can anyone give me any pointers or pitfalls to watch out for doing the following. I have Tein HA rear susp set up and wish to remove the damper and spring assembly to have a good look at the condition of it, and the top mount. As with most owners i have no manual (YET) and didn't wanna just jump straight in. Do i need to compress the spring to carry out the removal. Any input is greatly appreciated as are any scanned pages of relevant documents......hehe Thanks in advance guys...and gals Dan
  2. yes that is something i am definately planning to do. probably go for the maplins wide range temp module until i find a more elegant and permanent solution. interesting to measure temp changes from turbos to plenum. nice to do the same with pressure too, see how much is lost through the core and the pipework.
  3. cheers adam, the car has an hks peak hold boost gauge but no egt as yet. no doubt that won't be too far away. if the intercooler looks ok (not too many bent fins or too much cr@p in there) i may leave it in place and go down the water injection route for now. much much cheaper than a decent fmic even the fully mappable aquamist system so do people think 330bhp is around the reliable limit on a j spec without improved charge cooling and fuel mods?
  4. Hi all, Another question for you. I know the ecu on the mkiv is "fairly" sophisticated and retards ign timing (via knock sensor) to prevent detonation. If a car is running well on normal unleaded and the fuel used is changed to optimax will the ecu "realise" there's better fuel and not retard the ign as much or does it need to be rest to learn its limits again? hopefully less retarding and a few more ponies! Thanks in advance guys, hope someone can advise me accordingly..
  5. Regarding mods, am i right in thinking that intake mods other than a dedicated cold air feed don't really gain anything over a decent panel element until higher tuning levels than the stock turbos. What else on the "lower budget bpu" side of things can be done before intercooler or hybrids? Is it a case of upping the boost to perhaps 1.2bar as long as the fuelling stays ok? n.b. already have decent exh, lost 2nd cat, dump valve, fcd, ebc and t.timer. opinions people?
  6. sounds good mike, pretty quick then i'd imagine! i'm hoping for 330-340 at 1.0 bar. don't really wanna push the turbos too much just yet. are the j specs really down by 40bhp to the uk's? has anyone got any meaningful figures from same rollers to compare at all. i know this has probably been discussed before but i find it hard to believe there's such as deficit.
  7. thanks terry. I see, i thought perhaps up to 340-350 ish? Has anyone had similar mods and been on a rolling road and got some figures?
  8. Hi Guys, I have a question for anyone who is interested: Can anyone tell me what they think the power output from the following spec would be: Jap spec 6 speed manual Std J spec turbos Top small cat still in place Lower cat removed Trial s.steel exhaust (approx 3-3.5"bore up to silencer) Apexi dump valve Running 1.0bar Can anyone give their opinion on the difference in running this spec with optimax or s.u.l compared to normal u.l I'm guessing the ECU will be retarding the ign a fair bit if running on normal. I know this is heading for a BPU sort of question but not found any figures relating to a similar spec. Some people have told me the J spec cars put out well over the rated 280bhp and are up with the uk cars power wise. Do the J specs produce slightly greater torque than the uk cars too? I just wondered what this sort of spec would achieve. Thanks for any opinions guys.
  9. Hi Chris, I'm 99% interested in a copy of both. This is only subject to the cost really, which i know you can't quote us yet. For pricing up copies can you put me down for a set please and let me know the cost like everybody else when you can Thanks Dan
  10. can you let me know on cost and time, if it all sounds good then i'm definately in. Will they be loose pages for us to bind ourselves?
  11. hi all, found out that the dampers are Tein HA, after Chris's comments I'm thinking this is a bad thing. I know many people have had "rear" knocking problems, so can anyone recommend someone to diagnose the problem quicker and more efficiently than Toyota - swap this, swap that...sorry sir no good.... etc etc looks like i could be getting the beast at the end of next week
  12. all turbo technics jap replacement turbos are steel bladed. got to ring them monday to find out the exact spec. i don't think they'll be hybrids of any sort, just uk spec. will uk turbos bolt straight onto a jdm downpipe - i thought there were differences in wastegate sizing (or is this taken care of before the downpipe)
  13. i think they're going to be steel too, not sure on spec though. Probably just recon uk ones? still better than a pair of 50,000milers i suppose! thanks guys, appreciate all the help, any more opinions are much appreciated i'll keep you posted
  14. hi guys, not sure if i've missed someting or if you've already dismissed them but what about the Powerhouse Racing kits from US http://www.powerhouseracing.com/single2.shtml Stage 1 or 2 turbo kit sounds pretty good for low lag and plenty power. Have i missed something major here??
  15. cheers martin, thanks for describing the location of the fuel cut, i'll check that out, nice one andrew, really i just wanted to identify the turbos as either stock uk, stock jap or perhaps hybrids. do you think if they're not stock ceramic type (ie uk steel spec) then i'll have to tell insurers? thanks for your input andrew
  16. thanks for your help Andrew, it's great to get feedback of everyone here. I'm really hoping I'm going to find someone to do an inspection for me or at least check the car over, but having a bit of trouble at the mo. any ideas of anyone who might travel to Lyme Regis? paid of course
  17. do you mean that not having a fuel cut defencer installed is a bad thing and i should be a little happier if he has one installed?
  18. that's what i meant, running the higher boost at the higher temps (due to localised restriction from the top cat) may have reduced the life of the ceramic turbines perhaps. i may well be wrong! Seems quite low mileage for the turbos to give up don't you think?
  19. thanks andrew, this car's done 52,000miles which didn't seem a lot to me. Perhaps running the higher boost with top cat still in place increased egt's a lot, leading to quicker death of the turbo? i think i need to find out for definate if a fuel cut is fitted. Is it blatently obvious when i pull back the carpet in the footwell, should i see it or could it have been hidden elsewhere?
  20. ok cool, cheers Martin. I love the car, not too many mods, good cosmetic mods and owner is very honest (just not very knowledgeable!). how helpful is an rac/aa inspection likely to be, i'll check the oil cap(thanks for that) it's just other bits like the fuel cut possibility that's a bit iffy?!? are we thinking that a fuel cut would be a good or a bad thing??
  21. thanks for all your advice guys I really appreciate it. I hope you are not getting annoyed with me asking so many questions (martin) but i'm trying so sort out as many possible problems as possible. The car is too far away for someone like CW to come and look at it so bar an RAC/AA inspection. I'm on my own really. Big bucks if it all goes t!ts up !!
  22. i asked him about a fuel cut and in all honesty he'd never heard of one. He is very honest and has told me loads about the car. He is not a technical person, he entrusts the work to Allan Jeffries Tuning. I haven't had chance to look for the fuel cut as i didn't want to go pulling up carpet and nosing around in the footwell, the first time I met the bloke! I'm hoping to get someone knowledgeable to inspect the car for me (paid of course) and this is one thing i'd like them to check for. Anyone fancy checking the car over???????????
  23. He has the second (lower) cat removed, a trial exhaust, manual bleed valve, HKS gauge with tell tale, and a Turbo Timer. no ither performance mods as far as i know. he said the turbos began to squeal/whistle/etc, took it to his local tuners and they diagnosed a damaged turbo....hence the replacements. Waiting for a fax from t. Tech regarding the spec. The car does seem to pull much better above 3000rpm, but still pulls fairly well in the lower rev range. I can't offer much description/comparison here as my Supra experiences are extremely limited!!
  24. hi guys, just wondering: are the 2 pipes out of the cam covers the only crank case breathers on the mkiv, i thought there may be some larger ones via the block or similar. can anyone set me straight on this?
  25. they're not hybrids apparently Alex, as he didn't pay an awful lot for them and he was only after replacements really. I think the pair were in the region of £1000. I don't really want to ask T.Tech toooo many questions as i think he has a friend who works there (or used to). Just wondered if I'd be able to identify Jap or UK with them on the car.
