For quite a while now I've noticed a smell of hot oil when I get out of the car after driving it. Tonight I popped the bonnet and had a look at the engine bay and was surprised by quite how hot is was in there.
The insulating turbo blanket on the GT40 (Precision GT40/88 0.96A/R) was so hot I couldn't put my hand on it and even the 4" pipe from the compressor housing to the airfillter was too hot to touch for more than a second. (I used to be an exhaust fitter in a previous life, so I'm not being a wuss about how hot these part were )
I also noticed a slight oil leak on the turbo oil return hose, again.
Obviously I'm concerned about how hot the engine and engine oil is getting. Not sure what I can do about it though.
While writing this I've just remembered that the car has currently got the 2nd cat fitted. I haven't got round to removing it since my MoT a couple of weeks ago. Could this be the problem? Causing higher than normal EGT?
Thinking about it, the (3" post-turbo) EGT gauge is showing about 600°c on cruise. That's probably too hot, is it?
I wish my Oil Temp gauge sender hadn't packed up the last time I did an oil change. I need it at the moment.
Any thoughts?
