Well its off now. So i was planning on buying 10 litres of oil tomorrow (cheap motaquip stuff) and putting as much in as it will take. Is there any chance that it will be ok? It definitely does sound top end, it isn't a deep enough sound to be bottom end i dont think. Well i put the dipstick back in a couple of times as i couldn't believe it was that low! But there is a tiny bit of oil registering on the dipstick so there should be enough to hold pressure! If the engine was very very low on oil i assume it would become noisy. Guess the main question is though where is the oil going???
-
Also as there is no oil under the car in any of the places ive been or under it now i assume that there would still be oil over the components that move? Im just clutching at straws here. But there must be something serious wrong with the engine if it has just magically lost loads of oil in the last day?!
-
Right just been to check the car. The noise didnt go away when i pressed the clutch in. Only ran it for a few seconds. So i thought id check the fluids again. There is practically no oil in what so ever...! There was mid to full in yesterday. It hasn't been smoking or leaking from anywhere as ive been under it loads. Where has all the oil gone? Does this mean the noise is likely to be permanent damage now? I just cant work out where it has gone as i put in quite a bit the other day and checked it yesterday.

No sorry, there was a lighter ticking noise that i had noticed since owning the car that disappeared when pressing the clutch pedal, i thought this was just the flywheel tick. I have not tried depressing the clutch to see if this knock goes away.

The heatshield has been held in place and does not rattle checked this. It does rattle when under load. The thrust bearing, a new clutch was fitted 30k ago.... It has been ticking slightly since owning it and when dipping the clutch that has been going away...
-
No i held something against the heatshield to stop it from rattling. It really does sound "in" the engine. I was thinking knock rod? The fluids were low when i got the car but topped them straight up. Coolant and oil were both just above min. Also has literally just done over 100,000 miles...

I just bought my supra a few days ago and have a problem. Spent all day removing suspension components and cleaning/painting them, took the short drive home and was about to switch the ignition off when i heard this odd rattling noise. It has been making a noise but that was much more like a heatshield, this sounds like something in the engine..... Im really hoping its nothing serious but guessing it is. Car has been running fine since i got it last thursday and have had no real issues par a slightly tricky couple of starts which cleaning the plugs sorted... The video makes it sound louder than it is, but it is audible when you stand by the car....Today before noticing the noise it has been pulling fine, not using oil or coolant.

Been running for last 5 years....

car difficult to start after short trips, or when warm

Yer it is normally always worse. But a tiny bit of water causing a spark issue could cause a problem. But you'll find that out when looking at the plugs. Just throwing an idea out there for you, but not using water is a good indicator i am wrong :-) -
Also im looking for some exhaust advice also. Am i right in thinking the n/a exhaust system is made up of 4 components? 1. front manifold 2. back manifold 3. downpipe, cat and first silencer 4. 2 more silencers, then pipe then tailpip Just wondering if it has to remain this complex. Im also looking at replacing the brake disks and pads. For now until the engine build has completed i want basic oem or oem like parts. Where can i get these from? Ebay seems to be nearly £30 per disk which seems a tad steep!

http://www.toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyota/bv/frame_start.jsp?id=AfterSalesService There you go, second expanding section near the bottom. Just a quick check, but i managed to price up my work and how to do it too :-)

After taking the car to toyota im also planning on cleaning the suspension arms and other components and rust-proofing these with hammerite/waxyol. Im also looking at getting a new cd player installed tomorrow, and possibly the speakers.....Plus some more interior cleaning and tidying.

Just checked the rules for the project thread so adding pictures here.... Cleaned down and sprayed the engine components in a misty gunmetal colour:
-
Yes at every dealer... Only a visual inspection but they do check a few good points and a free half hour in the air can help you spot things too.
-
Will be doing. Think i may start a project thread however it may be a slow one. Oh also the toyota check is free for anyone at any toyota......

Have you done a compression test. Water getting into the chamber could lead to this.... -
Took my Supra up to Toyota today as i know someone up there. Had a nose at the supra on the ramp too. Nothing came back on the visual check apart from minor wear to the front pads. Pretty pleased. The underside did look pretty worse for wear so im going to paint all of the suspension arms etc in hammerite waxyol stuff tomorrow....

Cool. So are there many meets or things like that in or around coventry?
-
Also to do new lines with a roll of copper i would need a flare tool, and the correct size connectors, not sure if these are readily available?
-
Thought id pop these pictures up too! Started modding already i guess. lol Anyway after some deep cleaning and removal of parts my engine bay now looks like this, i used a really nice gunmetal colour:
