  1. Anyone else get this? Since I've upgraded to UK brakes (fab BTW), I've noticed that in certain conditions, when I press the brake pedal (pressure doesn't seem to make any difference), I get a solid metal on metal tapping noise. As an educated guess, I'd imagine that it was the pads being knocked onto the discs by the calipers and there being too much slack. I have exactly the same thing on my scooby which runs AP calipers. So for those techies out there: 1. What is it? 2. Is it a problem? 3. If so, how do I fix it? I draw some comfort from the fact that I have heard a very similar noise before in another very different car. However, given that car is also mine, I'm wondering if it is something to do with me. Any thoughts? Ta, Anthony.
  2. Good point about the nuts - I certainly don't want them rattling about in the wing!!!
  3. You never know with insurance companies - personally I don't trust them as far as I can spit them! After all, when I told them I put UK brakes on my J-Spec, they counted it as a performance modification which doubtless increased my premium !!
  4. erm... but if you don't tell your insurance company and your car is stolen, won't they just invalidate the insurance? Wouldn't it be treated exactly the same as not declaring performance modifications? I've been lusting after those intellistarts for ages, but it seems crazy to go for the world's best alarm system and end up with a car that is basically uninsurable!!! Has anyone with Intellistart told their insurance companies? If so, what was the response?
  5. Interesting - I have something similar but now I don't think it is the same problem... Mine is an automatic and the only time I notice it is when the box kicks down and boots the revs close to 6k rpm (i.e. when it shouldn't really have bothered kicking down). However, I do get full boost off no1 (.8 bar) and if I keep it nailed then after, say, 5 seconds, no2 suddenly spools up (note that it doesn't kick in anything like as fast as it does at 4k rpm - it takes a good couple of seconds to reach full boost). I also think it is worse when the weather is warmer (i.e. I've not seen it at all recently in the cold weather we've been having). From the sounds of it, this is subtly different to what you guys are experiencing? In any case, it certainly isn't getting any worse and doesn't do it very often so I'm disinclined to fiddle about with stuff too much in case I make it worse!! Just out of interest - why did Toyota make the 2nd turbo come online at 4k rpm? It seems too high to me - the 1st turbo is spun up well before then and it would be nice to get the grunt from a bit lower (I guess you guys with manuals wouldn't notice it as much). Is there a reason why and is it possible to move the point at which it happens?!
  6. Blimey - sounds nasty!!! I think I shall invest in a second umbrella to prop it up from both sides!! Did you have any trouble getting the trim off? I'm worried I'm going to break some little bit of plastic somewhere!
  7. I just got some replacement boot struts from my mk4 GZ aero and thought whilst it was sunny that I'd whip the old ones out and stick the new ones in. Hmmm, do you actually have to remove all of the trim to get to the bolts on the "car end" of the struts? Does anyone have any hints and tips on how to do it or know of any links to somewhere that details how to remove the back trim (I've tried some searches but not turned anything up)? I'm very excited about the possibility of not having to hold my boot lid up every time I go to Tescos !!!
  8. Hmm, I've found loads of stuff about squeaky aerotops but nothing about problems getting them on and off. My problem is that the socket that the allen key is supposed to go in is stripped so I can't undo it easily. I'm nervous about taking the roof off in case I can't bolt it back up again!! Also, does anyone know if you can get spare wrenches for the roof? Thanks!
  9. I'm looking at buying an Aerotop but one of the bolts in the roof (the middle one) is stripped so that the allen keys can't easiily open it. Has anyone suffered from this before and does anyone have any idea how I might get it fixed? Will it require a new roof or can that part of the mechanism be fixed? Many thanks, Anthony.
