I am under the understanding that if a car was built/manufactured with a cat it must have one:taped:. Rules for MOT's have had subtle changes over the last few years. I am also under the impression that noisey exhausts are also being targeted.

I'm sure someone on the forum had their rear glass out some weeks ago, with a photo. Can't remember what it was all about though:shrug:. Must be some info somewhere.

Electrical Gremlins after alternator change
ghostbuster replied to Jamie698's topic in mkiv Technical
It may sound silly but make sure your brake fluid is topped right up:idea:, honest this really has caught out a few! -
Fat fingers, I meant MOD not mos.
-
Please tell me more, just done the mos a couple of weeks ago, quite a change!

Have you checked the diodes (individually) ?
-
I had a prob with one of the diodes breaking down:taped:, got a new diode plate fitted and everything was OK:innocent:

There's also a great little device I got from ebay, you just plug it in to your cig lighter and it give you the volts reading as you drive. Maybe not the finest but as a quick check it works fine.

They both got lost in cyberspace! Replace the fuse (clean the contacts if needed). Check the Alt on a test bench (not in situ).

Two things that may help. (not in situ).

The green bot is on the bulbs from Toyota (and so it should be for the price). -

You can get the bulbs from your Toyota store at about £5 each:taped: Best to take in a pattern though as there are a few different ones in the whole system. -

Well after speaking with the company I went for it. They arrived in SUPER QUICK time thanks to Jim at Alloygator (a company who do what they say they will do 10 out of 10). Probably the best 'Bolt On' I've ever had to do. I say bolt on as usually when it says that its a pain in the butt! Just follow the instructions and is a walk in the park. I'll try to get a photo or two. maybe tomorrow or Sunday.

It was some time ago (a couple of years) when this was asked before and I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge I can tap into regarding how good (or bad) 'ALLOYGATORS' are, I'm just in the middle of re-furbing my wheels and the last thing I need to do is curb one of them (we all know about sod's law)? Just had a thought, maybe it would be better not to take the Supra anywhere where there are curbs etc?

It really does sound like a duff alt AND the wrong one.

It's also worth cleaning the earthing straps between the engine lump and the body (on any older car), poor earthing causes a multitude of different (sometimes intermittent, the worst kind) probs once it is there, and you can't always see it just by looking at the connection, you need to undo it and examine properly or you may end up chasing your tail.

Have you had the dash out recently, sometimes the plugs on the left and/or right top do not connect properly. Mind you I did have a similar problem when my alternator was slowly conking out with a diode fault. Maybe worth checking the alt on a test bench (even though its a new one).

You may find running around the edge with a stanley knife helps, but be careful not to slip and lose a digit or to cut through the gully the glass fits into. I've found 5 mins is plenty. If they have been re stuck with silicone you can get silicone remover from B&Q, it's an overnight wait though. Make sure they are VERY clean and VERY dry when you put them back together, you will probably find they will mist up a lot more after though.

Make me think of the old saying . . . . If you don't want to know the answer don't ask the question. Seem like it's too late for some?

Exhaust Notes before and after #1 Decat
ghostbuster replied to ghostbuster's topic in mkiv Technical
Yes I know, but my thoughts are other than indicate to the dash a 'Hot Cat' does it's reading mean anything to the ECU? -
I've read many great and helpful bits of info on this forum, so here's something someone else might be interested in from me:innocent:. I made a video recording of the exhaust note on my jap spec 1994 TT, it's got an after market intercooler (the original went all flakey and I believe was leaking), it also has a catback exhaust. Well now I've removed the #1 cat to see what the difference is, here are a few points that may be of interest. I didn't have the greatest of luck removing the cat as the three studs up to the manifold extension were stuffed:(, two screwed out of the manifold and brought the threads with them the final one broke off (after heating all with oxy/cet), it was the most difficult one to get at (naturally) and had to be drilled out and new treads tapped all round. I would not recommend this unless you have the use of a ramp etc. The decat pipe was about 30mm shorter than the cat so the rest of the exhaust was dragged forwards (no real prob but maybe the rubber exhaust hanging rings may not last their full life due to the extra bit of strain). Anyway, I shot a bit of video before the cat removal and a bit after. I was most interested to see what difference it made to the amount of exhaust noise, well to be honest very little, mine is not a loud car anyway (probably due to the efficient cooling of exhaust gasses in the cat back pipe). It has made a little difference to the overall sound, it's a bit more growl ish but hardly and louder at all. I only finished this yesterday afternoon so I've not done much testing (and I'm not 100% sure I trust the boost dial, it's got a Fast & Furious sticker on it:jester:) I noticed right away when driving it that it has a noticeable increase in 'bottom end', the boost seems to come in a bit earlier. I'm not sure if there is more boost though, I'm going to get another gauge, just to be sure. Here's the link to YouTube http://youtu.be/2zgajz8Kbtc (I hope ) I was wondering? The #1 cat has a sensor probe, this I presume is supplying info to the engine management system, now it's not connected what is NOT happening? anyone know? Regards, Mike.

Well worth getting the alt tested. I've just been there and mine was breaking down as load increased due to rectifier probs. I got mine repaired by a specialist here in Devon (cheaper than replacement).
