In my opinion an N95 is wasted if you don't have 3G access - 3G access is wasted if it costs a fortune, so for me T-Mobile on Web & Walk Unlimited was the only option really, other providers have improved since though I believe.
It's nice to be able to download podcasts, music, stream TV, check mail, surf the 'net etc without worrying about download limits or excessive data costs.
The N95 seems to have tapped into a good network of application developers, lots of useful stuff coming out. If you do get one you might miss the touchscreen, you might get annoyed by the small buttons and you will definitely need chargers in all the locations you visit. Otherwise it's a good choice if you update the firmware - Orange are terrible at keeping this current so a lot of users whinge about the phone being pants when it's actually their firmware release that causes the issues.
I presume Sony, Samsung etc do similar phones now, on the fringes you might want to look at something like the LG Viewty, LG Venus, K850i, T-Mobile Touch Plus, T-Mobile Ameo and so on...
