“The legend returns” Toyota GB tweet tease of supra with BGW

Nice pics, must have been a great feeling seeing it up close and personal, with what it means. The ease with which they were pushing it into the stand in the earlier post demonstrated to me that it must have just been a rolling shell mock up. They seem to still be deliberating over engine specs etc. I’d expect to see a few different trims at various price ranges; with the top of the range possibly even being a hybrid version, which I personally think is exciting, as it’ll be to boost performance, not just save the planet. I was also surprised to hear how the Toyota BMW relationship seemed to hit the rocks early, with them saying it took 2 years to pretty much be on the same wavelength to make a start on the joint venture. I love the pic you took of the history of the supra with all the chassis codes. So many media outlets have missed the significance(but not all) Anyone else expect to see the S55 engine from the BMW M3? Made in 2014. It’s meant to be tuneable and reasonably reliable for a BMW engine. -

Reading the articles coming out from Toyota interviews, seemingly the Supra will have a lower centre of gravity that the GT86, and a 50/50 weight distribution. It’s also to have a shorter wheelbase that the 86, and will be strictly a 2 seater. They were again confirming straight 6 turbocharged engine, after asking “supra fans” all over the world (especially in the United States) what engine it should have and them mostly saying that. However they added that the same people weren’t bothered about it having a manual option, so seems unlikely one will be offered (however this last point wasn’t expressly said, and was the interviewers feel of the answer) Car and driver got this out of them though with regards to a manual • Tada tells us that there wasn’t much demand from Supra enthusiasts for a manual transmission in the street model—although we find that hard to believe, and he definitely didn’t ask us what we thought. Yet despite that fact and much reporting to the contrary, hope for a manual may not actually be dead after all. When asked if a stick could be added into the mix, he demurred and expressed his desire to make that happen, saying earnestly and with a bit of a twinkle in his eye that he will “try to do his best.” Tada says the team is also considering a model that leverages Lexus’s latest hybrid powertrain as seen in the LS and the LC, although cost remains a worry there. • The streetable Supra won’t have brake-based torque vectoring, instead being fitted with a true active rear differential. -

There is a little bit. From the top gear link I shared : What about the mechanicals? “I spoke to Supra fans. The six-cylinder engine, turbos, and front-engine-rear-drive layout are vital.” BMW does those things doesn’t it? “Yes, so we collaborated.” Which means, and Tada confirms this, the Supra won’t use the Lexus V8. A BMW six then? “Few car companies have straight-six engines,” he replies. “Toyota did but it doesn’t any longer.” Toyota’s European R&D head Gerald Killmans later confirms that it’s a recalibrated version of the BMW engine. We suspect the M3’s twin-turbo. That means 450bhp ballpark. What about a hybrid? “We are looking at it, but it’s not decided,” says Tada. Given Toyota makes a hybrid Le Mans car, that consideration must be pretty serious. Suspension, Killmans says, is also similar in basic principles to the BMW system, but with a different tune. The Supra will also be built at a BMW factory, Tada acknowledges. It will carry GRMN badging beneath its Toyota logos. That’s Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nurburgring. GR is Toyota’s new specialist sporting division. Tada says there will be GRMN versions of lots of Toyotas, starting with the lairy little Yaris GRMN. -

Sorry to disappoint, but just seen this from their Facebook page. Hi Tom, we are planning a reveal during the first half of next year, so keep an eye on our blog and social media channels. Thanks. Gives me time to save up for the show I guess -

This is pretty cool, hinting that the chassis code will have a 90 in it, following the trend of the MA70 and JZA80:cool: “Created by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the concept perfectly expresses the “fun to drive” quality that is intrinsic to Toyota’s commitment to making ever-better cars. The large “90” race number on its doors is a historical reference to Supra’s codename and a big visual clue to the fact that this concept heralds Supra’s return in a fifth generation.” P.s Shawn, I kinda get what you mean with the smiley face -

I agree, the leaked pics from the Japanese magazines match this shape perfectly, without the body kit, so I’d be very surprised if that’s not what it looked like when the rd going version is revealed in NYC. Think it looks great, expecially from the side. It keeps a lot of the proportions of the Mkiv and there are still quite a lot of the design from the FT-1 kept: watered down a bit as we expected. One thing I wish they kept from the ft-1 is the massive side scoops on the doors; it’s obviously not easy enough to scale it to full production. Still to see that version officially though so let’s see. If the leaked pics are now showing to be credible, then perhaps the leaked info on engines was too. Thanks to Pete for the pics, anyone who’s actually there, it’d Be good to hear from you Wonder if anyone still doubts the revival of the supra name now lol -

Looks like a rolling shell, yeah. Hopefully we will get some further info confirmed as has been said. However, for the road going version it’s the equivalent car show in New York a bit later on that they have indicated they will reveal the street car. This will give us a close idea to the basic body shape if you take away the wing etc. -

Oooohhh nice. Yeah I thought most folk knew, it’s a racing concept of the new supra, with the road going version going on display in NYC a short time later. This might give us a look what the top spec supra GRMN might be a bit like in a few years once the top spec is brought to market. -

If anyone is still against it being branded under “Gazoo” (and is it me or does GRMN just say garmin sat nav any time you read it?) but it’s effectively TRD that are developing it, and this quote might convert those who don’t like the new name “As with all other GR models, such as the Yaris GRMN, the company will offer an extensive range of aftermarket tuning parts for the new sports car.” -

Welcome, and great find I don’t think it needs a respray. Save your money, the polish looks good to me, and the origional paint job will be hard to match.

Lovely car, great write up and good to see it being well cared for. Also glad to hear your health is improving. Keep up the good work

Any idea if there is a difference in this part for the uk specs larger fuel tank?

You’ll love them. Is this crypto profits

They will be! Only thing I found with them is they can squeak while going over things like speed bumps etc. I contacted KW and they said it’s the oil traveling through the shock and normal. It seems to be during colder weather (where I guess the oil is thicker). When I get the car back on the rd after winter I’d like to try their softest setting for a while just to see what it’s like. FYI I don’t think you are meant to have them on the apsolute softest OR hardest settings; it’s meant to be one back from it.

I fitted these last year myself. Took me about 8h but had to cut the old drop link bolts and only had a hack saw to hand. I’m sure I found the guide on here very helpful. Also remember I had to modify the top mounts slightly to widen the bore so the top bolt would fit through. Good luck

Perhaps Steve manly has Akio Toyoda’s email In his outlook?

That’s disappointing isn’t it. Perhaps Nissan now saying they are doing it will shame them into re-thinking it.

Hope they listen. The Porsche setup meantioned above let’s you order through any local dealership. It would be fantastic.
