  1. My NA will purr at about 500 when hot and when it heatsoaks after a minute or two without moving, it drops to about 450 and starts to 'lope' or fluctuate. Sounds really cool though, like big cams with more valve overlap. I'd say that anything less than 400rpm would stall it. My idle speed can be adjusted manually via two screw in/out breather vents in a hose above the rocker covers at the back. They open under high vacuum, presumably to maintain proper AFR at WOT but no idea who fitted them and exactly why; probably to stop it stalling from a BHG!
  2. A twin system is good for rapid spooling at lower rev's if you have a smaller primary turbo matched with a larger secondary. This gives a broader power band and is more driveable on the street as boost comes in earlier from the smaller primary turbo (which requires less power to spin, since it has less rotating mass) but doesn't have the all-out power of a big single unless you're talking two bigger but still different sized turbos and a very highly tuned setup. Both work well but tuning a single is easier, as you don't have the overlap to deal with. Big singles tend also to give a slower response but a bigger kick when they come in, so you have to be more careful with the loud pedal in the wet. Singles also allow a simplified path for the air to go through and this helps to maintain airspeed. Weight reduction is another factor, if you're racing.
  3. Why not go for something a little more subtle?
  4. Just recently bought a twin scroll T4 XSpower Stage V turbo (.60A/R, 1.15A/R) for £90 delivered; normally £500+ new. Rated at 700-1000hp and in practically new condition but only problem is the cost of NA-T'ing the engine/fuelling to make the most of it. Doubtless I'll be told to bin it and get a decent one but should give good bang for the buck!
  5. Just incase you aren't very mechanically minded, have you checked the oil level recently? How is the coolant temperature when the rev's top out? Sounds to me like overheating from not enough coolant (leaking rad?) or critical oil level and semi-seizure. Only things I can think of from experience that produce the same symptoms. The power loss could be from detonation and timing retard to protect the engine. If it gets too hot, it will ignite the air/fuel charge before TDC or whatever advance is set and it will try to run backwards, (causing major damage if severe enough), so the engine waits until later to fire the spark plug/s and you lose the 'sweet spot' and then some! Could be a failing fuel pump or blocked injector/s, air/filter. Could be many things. Try to find someone to ride with you who has a 'sixth sense' about engines, like a mechanic. What won't do any harm and might help is a bottle of Wynn's or Lucas injector cleaner in a low fuel tank, so it's quite concentrated. Will give a noticeable improvement in power if the injectors are dirty and a much cleaner exhaust.
  6. I was only joking but if the transfer case didn't mind, you'd presumably get more power to the rear. I don't know how it works on those and wouldn't seriously modify it, as I'd prefer AWD anyway. That's half the reason I was looking at them as I don't like being tail happy in the wet; too unpredictable for me with a turbo.
  7. "Far out! How did you just turn into a lizard, man?"
  8. You mean they don't have much appeal? Just remove the front driveshafts and tart up the interior. Tell you what though; they have a near mint RR Silver Shadow for £10k with only 43,000 miles! Be great for banger racing! Seriously though, ring them and ask if you've only emailed them so far. I personally don't like to trust people who can't spell things like 'marque' and instead say 'mark'. Doesn't mean that they're dishonest though. Just using the English but doesn't sound the same to me. I think you'd be fine. They have a nice range. Expect a younger owner though. Doesn't smack of mature gentleman to me. Again, not necessarily a problem.
  9. Hey, why not get an ST205 Celica GT Four? Same engine as this MR2 and 4WD. They even look like Supras from some angles. I was dead set on getting one before the Supra but saw an old Top Gear video with Jeremy Clarkson comparing it to an Escort Cosworth and the head and legroom were much better in the Escort. Otherwise I'd have bought one, I'm sure. He was looking particularly cramped in the Celica. Fwiw.

And now for something completely different!

The current 'project' is an American truck/SUV restoration. The 4.3L V6 turbocharged GMC Typhoon is the limited edition high performance version of the popular Jimmy SUV, one of which I owned in 1995. That's how I discovered the Typhoon when the W.W.W. was in it's early infancy and wanted one ever since. My chance came 3 years ago for £2600 but due to poor compression and my overwhelming curiousity to find out what rods were fitted, I fully stripped and cleaned the engine but it needs cylinder honing and the new Pro-Gram billet steel main caps fitted and lots of head work before re-assembly in my new workshop, which is under construction, or will be if it can stop raining long enough! Stock GMC Typhoons are 280-300hp depending on the truck (or owner!) and go 0-60mph in 5.0-5.3 seconds with the stock Mitsubishi 16G (TD06-17C) turbo. This one was already highly modified but I'll take it quite a bit further while I have the engine apart, since many components need replacing anyway. It will be fully portmatched, (and I mean perfectly), then valve bowl-blended and cc'd (exactly matched for combustion chamber volume after reworking), with ceramic coated pistons, runners and combustion chambers of the replacement 1996 Vortec heads, 5 angle stainless valve job, 1:6 Comp Cams SS roller rockers and an Isky Racing Cam & springs, all bought and paid for. Other items will be Eagle H-Beam rods, Clevite 'H' series race bearings etc. Should get it in the 12's with no problems with the Mitsubishi 20G turbo but may 'need' to replace it with something bigger, as it's quite worn. A stock Typhoon will leave a JDM Supra TT standing in a quarter mile and stay ahead until the last few yards. Official time is 14.1 seconds @95mph terminal velocity; not bad for a stock, factory 3822lb truck. In The States, these trucks are known as Stoplight Warriors, since nothing else can match their acceleration between trafficlights, except the pickup version, the Syclone. Youtube them!
