I had the same thing in my gen 6 Celica, cable from motor wasn't replaceable so I got a whole unit from a scrapyard for a tenner and fitted it in less than an hour

Yep, same here, but I never retract them. I'd rather someone caught the mirror squeezing past the car than scratch the door ( coat zippers and the like ) -
