MODS PLEASE DELETE. I've re-posted in the original FOR SALE thread
  4. I've recently suffered a BHG on the N/A and decided to go down the like for like lower milage engine swap route in preperation for a NA-T conversion I want to get in with Paul in three months. Does anyone have any recommendations for a competent garage to carry out the engine swap in the Salisbury area as I still need the car in the meantime? My usual trustworthy garage is unable to do it as they have limited space.
  5. The leaking oil was coming from the oil filter seal. There's no more clanking either, just the cooling issue. So with that in mind is it still not worth getting the HG replaced as everything else is ok?
  6. OK, here's the new sketch. Located and replaced the split water heater hose. Refilled cooling sytem. Test drive. Outcome, several times the coolant kept getting pushed to almost overflow in the expansion tank and blew the lid off. Rad cap off - no coolant seen in rad. I've tried several times to bleed the air out with heater on full with the same result. So I took a quick look for leaks - none found. Took the oil fill cap off and the white cream sludge of death was evident on the bottom of the cap Soooooooo, BHG? If so (FFS) what sort of cost am I expecting to fix it?
  7. Thanks guys. I investigated further and it turns out one of the coolant pipes to the top rear of engine has ruptured. So that explains that. I topped up the rad and the engine temp went back down and no clanking! Maybe the clutch slip was due to the engine overheating so much the oil got too thin? I dunno..just hoping!
  8. Afternoon! Backstory - (Manual N/A, J-spec) Slowly been losing oil after long drives so I top up pretty much before most journeys. After the car has warmed up in situ there is often a puddle of oil on the ground. I topped up today as normal and overfilled so the level showed above full, which I was slightly worried about. Half an hour into journey all was fine until I accelerated onto a duel carriage way and that's when I noticed the smell of fresh oil. Shortly after, the water temp rose into the red followed by the engine temp hitting the red. Exiting the carriageway white smoke came from the rear and engine but only at low speed. I pulled over to investigate and found evidence of oil sprayed around mid/top of engine and fresh oil over the back of the car. The dip stick (wiped) still showed above full too. Upon restarting the engine it struggled to catch and made some nasty clanking sounds, but once started sounded ok. Water temp went down but engine stayed high and the clutch started to slip on the limp back home. So is it likely to be a blown seal(s)? top or bottom end? or worse, mechanical? I'm going to check the level again when it's cooled a bit more and see what other interesting sounds come out. Help/Advice appreciated before I take it to a garage to get ripped off. Many thanks

  12. I was pretty much around the corner from camp by the time it had failed completely and I was just pootling along with hazzards I found that out too by simply bending the universe around my car using my butt cheeks once the first no steer happened I know! I try not to think about it had I been cornering in the outside lane... Alas it was just a generic Toyota fitment one...lesson learned there. Shelling out the extra bucks on a decent one now. Get off my lawn!
  13. Ok, so I'm on the A303 about 100 miles into my 110 mile journey back to camp this weekend, and I notice my steering wheel is slightly sticking and releasing at the end of the left and right turning play. Then the play tolerence started to increase slighty after a few more stick and release moments. I decide to pull over at the next layby to investigate further except upon approaching the next bumpy bend the steering wheel turns almost 45 degrees and the car goes straight on! [sHOCK][/sHOCK] Luckily the steering wheel gripped again and I was able to limp around the bend but with the SW now 180 degrees out. By the time I reach camp the SW rotates freely without turning the wheels This is what I found: http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/706/089ac.jpg http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2056/090by.jpg http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/9830/091cr.jpg The hub splines have disintergrated as well as my undies....

  16. You may have a calibration screw somewhere behind the clocks, like the Thor units do. If you do use a Sat Nav to adjust the speed, bare in mind they use an AVERAGE speed not actual speed.

Just seen an advert for Demon Shine. Apparently you just mix with water and pour on and let it dry and that's it. No buffing or anything.....
  23. Indeed. It's the age old addage of Bullshizz Baffles Brains. If it looks like it's in good order on the outside there's less inclination to delve too deep because of mileage. Any receipts for work also help with high mileage motors as they can see they've been looked after. A good example of BBB is the register of the vehicle to a female or elderly owner. Some people automatically think it's had an easy life thus easier to sell with high mileage. mind games...
