  3. The whole point of Man Playing GOD to me is just outrageous. I would say the very moment man started to use his intelligence and created fire, thousands of years ago by rubbing stones together, that is when man started to play god (if you attribute the ability to start fire can only be done by god). This might sound funny but looking into the night sky at the stars is also playing god. I say this because if we keep looking at them then we start to question what they are and how far they are, then we end up where we are .... Playing GOD (which is what for Galileo & Copernicus did). If if we lose the ability to question then there is no difference between us and other animals with no intelligence. Hey but they also dont have religion or faith or God. They dont have intelligence to invent these! If you see an insect or a fly on you hand you just kill it. You dont think about taking the life off that insect is playing god. Coming to your point about boundaries, it all comes down to what features/abilities you attribute to GOD (probably it depends on your faith)? What only He/She/It can do and we cant do, and when we start doing things which previously we thought we cant do is it then we start playing god? Is it when we are crossing boundaries? How do you define extremes & boundaries in the present?

  5. Dont think most of you guys want to hear this, also it is pushing it a bit too far for current cultures/standards and slightly related to the topic of this thread.... MEAT This is humans will be able to grow meat by cloning muscle tissue. Growing just part of the animal we need. No animal suffering involved and the meat gets highly inexpensive with high quality of nutrients we need. Most of all no environmental damage like factory farming and no need to rear animals and deal with their disease. This has been done experimentally and is about 20 years away from becoming part of our lifestyle.

  8. There is something call synthetic DNA which is already in existence. This will aid in creating synthetic cells. Currently synthetic cells are created in labs it will be a while before you can build synthetic organs which will not die. The DNA code is already decoded which makes the synthetic cell a reality.   9. There is nanocell technology but it is not in the way you are describing in here. Nanocell is used to deliver drugs to cells and tissue at the lowest cellular or subcellular level. There cannot be any synthetic cell that can be based on nanotechnology that can replace our existing cell. This is because they dont have DNA. The difference between biological and non biological matter is DNA. You can make the composition of a nonbiological matter exactly same as biological matter but you cannot provide it with a working DNA and so it cannot come to life. But what you can have is the basic/generic cell - Stem cell, that you can program to build any organ, which is what happens at the moment in an embryo. A bunch of cell depending on the DNA grows different organs and bones when you are in the womb. Until 2 decades ago the assumption was that this organic growth of organs form stem cells can only occur in the womb. What science + nanotechnology is doing for us now is that we can grow this inside a lab outside the womb. The process of aging can also be slowed down quite dramatically (not sure it could be reversed like in the film). So in the future even though you are 100 you still would be strong and not retired from work. The important thing we should understand here is that our generation is in the border line for this tech to become mainstream.

  12. Good question. Nano technology is used to program stem cells to grow into a specific tissue/organ. Every organ can be grown from stem cells including the brain & eyes (though growing brain is still at a theoretical level compared to other organs). I always wondered how the two sections in the industry dealing with non-organic stuff (physics & chemistry) and the other dealing with organic stuff (biology) has been evolving separately will catch up with each other as they go down to the smallest level where they both appear to look the same. Where the boundary between organic and non organic doesnt exist. To put it in another way, biological matter and nonbiological matter are made up of the same basic elements at the smallest level (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen etc). Organic tissue is made up of cells and each cell again is made of various proteins including DNA which in turn are made up of these basic elements having their own complicated compound structure. Each cell in any tissue have their own life span and they multiply and also die. In human body millions of cells are born everyday and so also millions die everyday. But the strange thing about death is that suddenly all the cells across the body in all the tissues and organs decide to die. There was once a great program on BBC horizon looking to the issue of death at cellular level cant find it. It was quite interesting.

  15. But then with those abilities you question why he gave us those abilities? May be these abilities are given to us after all to PLAY GOD. Yes over population is a very serious problem because we end up use more and more resources. No surprise why our abilities also gave us contraception. Over population and excessive use of natural resources is mostly in countries that dont use contraception (trying not to play god) and are mostly poor (cannot afford to pay for contraception). To be honest believing in GOD is not going to make our population any less. You know that and I know that.
  16. hmm .. in that case we should close all our hospitals and stop doing any operations/surgeries to increase human life span. Infact the moment our species started thinking and getting more intelligent that is when we started playing god ... if you call it playing GOD! Maybe we should not think at all in the first place if you dont want to play GOD. Then you will never know about GOD either! Catch 22 init? Coz if you think and use intelligence you will end up playing GOD and prove GOD dont exist and if you dont think (prob because of no intelligence) then you will not play GOD but then you will not also dont understand the word GOD. Either way GOD dont exist.

I may be too optimistic but in 30 years from now we should be able to replace all our ageing organs, easily living for 150 years or possibly even longer!   20. No I never said Android is based on Win Mob. It is obviously bases on linux kernel and pretty much every thing written in Java. But what I dont find is any difference between WinMob 6.5 phones and Android Phones. There were a plethora of WinMob phone manufacturers like HP. Dell, Siemens, Asus, Nokia, HTC, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Motorola, Sony Erricson, Sharp, Acer etc etc (I would go even as far as saying that there were more WinMob manufacturer than there are current android phone manufacturers). Each of these manufacturers could customize the UI on each of their phones to make them feel a bit unique and different though underneath the UI and themes it is the same WinMob OS. And on the top of this we have the XDA forum pumping out new ROMS and updates all the time into the market. So if anybody is not happy with the carrier or manufacturers UI/Themes they can flash the new ROMs from XDA developers. Samsung came out with a few UIs, the last one is Touchwiz. After MS dropped WinMob, samsung ported this UI onto Android. Same is the case with HTC. They had Sense UI for dogs years in WinMob. Then this got ported also onto Android. As WinMob is like a lighter version of PC software it supported both .NET framework and JAVA runtimes. I suppose these manufacturers might have written these UIs in Java which helped them to port them easily onto Android which is JAVA ONLY platform. MS scrapped WinMob because of the emergence of multi touch screens. They decided to rewrite the whole OS rather than implement mutitouch into the existing WinMob 6.5 code. Also all the apps written for WinMob 6.5 are not written for multi touch. Anyway if I go to any phone retail store and look at an Android device, I am blown away with the kind of hardware the manufacturers are bringing to the phones. This is the kind of hardware I had on my laptop in 2006. Coming to the software, (sorry might upset some of you guys) but for me Android looks another iterations of WinMob 6.5 rather a good iteration. The look and feel of the UI is 99% the same. I dont see anything special or innovative in Android rather it looks like an OS following the technology curve not ahead (like apple did). Yes google bundles a lot of their services which is nice and they have made their services way better than they were in 2006/07 and optimized from Android phones. This is a biggie: All the open platform stuff is a serious myth as there were more manufacturers who adopted WinMob 6.5 and there were more ROMs on XDA developer forums for WinMob6.5 than they are now for Android. Because WinMob supported both .NET ad Java, you can be a developer from any language background like, C++, Java, C#, VB etc etc and still you could develop native applications for WinMob. Android only supports Java. Another issue is, as the OS is just the same in WinMob 6.5 (locked down) across all manufacturers, apps written for one phone could be run on another manufacturers phone (as long as the hardware is similar). Which is the presently same with most of Android applications but as the OS is open source each manufacturer can change the OS and making their own customized version/flavour of Android and this will cause a lot of problems in the future. Also each can go ahead and add extra hardware making the apps incompatible. An application written for Motorola Android will not work on Samsung version of Android or HTCs version of Android. If any of you are new to the smart phones and only started using them in the last 2-3 years, I can tell you for now Android looks nice and good for you but in a couple of years down the line you will get bored of customizations and different incompatible versions of OS between manf and also due to more fragmentation within Android. Unless google gets their act together and locks down the OS and also puts a minimum spec on the hardware it will go through the same hell as WinMob. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/five-reasons-android-can-fail/9147
