An A340E automatic transmission is a box full of clutches and sooner or later, one of them will wear out first.
O.D. is the weakest, only 2 clutch-plates here.
O.D. stands for Over-Driven, and is for light-throttle eco-cruising.
Always turn O.D. off for WOT driving.
Always also, engage "Low" for any burnout silliness, if it gets the chance to change-up to 2nd-gear mid-burnout, it's very likely to break 2nd-gear clutch-basket. (Sprag)
Avoid these pitfalls, maintain ATF correctly and the transmission should live on to become a ripe old age.
Eventually, dying a slow peaceful death from slipping 3rd-gear clutches.
