New triple plate clutch rattles while driving/ under load engaged..?
jihwaan replied to jihwaan's topic in Supra Chat
^^^ this is exactly what I thought I knew (and I bet I read it in one of your previous posts).. However I had to give the noise some credence as this mechanic really is the best there is around these parts... I like it when CW trolls through my threads and shares his knowledge. Chris you (and the other few guys - they know who they are- really contribute and make this forum such a good place to come and learn, and the fact you take the time for us and to answer our questions- guess I just wanna say thanks again. I don't get to drive my supra much, let alone get on the forums.... but when I do its usually with a problem and its great to have everyone's input- so thanks everyone for the replies! -
Ok so I had my mechanic install my exedy triple plate - sold disc centres - ceramatalic (what a lovely clutch to drive)- and of course its making the usual rattling noises at idle etc- no big deal. But under load when driving and when engine braking on decel you can hear this, well, rattle is the only word I can use to describe it but its more like a vibration rattle if you can get me- not there all the time just most times when under low load uphill, decel etc. Now I am not overly concerned coz the last clutch did this worse (and that was a twin disc sprung centres) - but my mechanic is. He says its bullshit and under load their should be no noise- I tried to explain I think its because there is no longer a dual mass flywheel to balance the drive line (its now a solid flywheel) the gear sets and all the other shit inside the box will rattle slightly with the harmonics of the engine at certain rpm / between certain rpm now that the dual mass flywheel is no longer in place to remove / reduce this - he isn't buying it (I don't know shit that is just what I have read and been told). He has been on the phone to Exedy Aust who say clutch shouldn't be making any noise under load/ normal driving- I agree and am saying its the rest of the gearbox that is rattling. Normally I wouldnt give a shit and drive it because I am happy with it but this is the best mechanic around by far, and I take his word on pretty much everything as he is a no bullshit if he doesnt know he will find out type of guy with decades experience. Any opinon's / idea's? I don't know shit and am not afraid to admit that- but it seems sensible to me an undampened driveline is gonna rattle... but when a man who you respect and trust his 40+ years experience says it aint right it really makes me wonder and think maybe i need to look into this...? (CW maybe...... lol I can only hope he stumbles past with an opinion...)

And here I was thinkin' 'geez I hope that troll Chris Wilson wanders past here and throws his 2c in (which at current market rates is usually somewhere between worth a shit load and priceless). No but seriously thanks Chris I was hoping you would happen past. I don't suppose you may throw another opinion to this thread- are the exedy twin plates any good? if not I am torn between the 'RPS Carbon-Carbon Twin Disc Clutch which will work out the same as I can get OS Giken Triple Plate Clutch- OS Giken R3C type clutch. Would you reccomend either of these?

Yeah the discs prolly do need replacing because its done a whopping 3000kms since it was fitted... From what i understand there should be nothing wrong with the discs because they were in EXTREMELY good condition when the clutch was fitted and the car hasnt been driven hard at all..and its only done 3k kms Although the clutch was second hand it was fairly new (previous owner hated how harsh it was).. I have read somewhere that the HKS clutches can be adjusted but i cannot find any more information. Can anyone tell me if they have adjustment?
-
Cmon guys someone must know? My search skills are lacking at present-day I can't find any info anywhere

Have a HKS twin/ dual plate clutch in my supra and its slipping (as soon as she starts coming on boost). The pedal has no play in it at all and is very stiff. Is there adjustment on these clutches and if so can someone point me towards some instructions? Thanks!

I have 19's - had these same wheels on both supra's - my last supra had bilsteins and she handled like she was on rails with these wheels but the ride was slightly harsh (nothing unbearable- just a little harsh- depends on the condition of the roads a lot also) but this supra I have now just has standard RZ-s suspension and its fine- the softer suspension more than compensates for the lack of sidewall. They fill the guards nicely too.

need a 12v+ connection when only when engine is running ?
jihwaan replied to jihwaan's topic in Supra Chat
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I think I may firdst try using that to feed the relays- I think it should have sufficient signal if wired that close to the source- if not I will get a signal relay. I dont know why I didn't think of that myself. Thansk again -

I need the positive feed even when the ignition barrel is physically turned off for when the turbo timer is running- I dont know how yours is wired up but when my car is running off the turbo timer the accessories and everything else is switched off- only the engine is running. Think Ill just go trolling around with a multimeter until I find what I need.. -

which stock wires? I have a feeling mine are no longer there as I have a 52mm aluminum radiator etc and the sensors may have been removed when tis was installed.. -

possibly yes this is what I will end up doing- but i was hoping there woudl be something in the engine bay I could just tap into- I currently have them running of a thermo switch / sensor but it seems to be playing up so after reading that on the PHR site I thought if I could just wire the +ve from the relays onto something that has power only when engine is running I could ditch the themro switch and itw oulod be fast and simp0le. -

jihwaan replied to jihwaan's topic in Supra Chat
no - anytime the engine is running at all.. because if its running on the turbo timer I still want the fans running.. -
on the powerhouse racing site- they state you can wire these fans to "anything that gets power power when you start your Supra (alternator for example). No thermostat necessary! " Now which wire on the alternator has a positive 12v+ feed when the engine is running only? Can anyone tell me which wire I am looking for before I go probing around with a multimeter and probably burn my arm or something? Thanks for any help in advance guys...

Nah it didnt effect engine temps at all- I fitted a 52mm alloy radiator at the same time though- and twin fans- plus I have a vented top secret style bonnet- but to be honest I dont think it would effect temps much if anything at all on a standard car.
