I certainly believe in coming down like a ton of bricks on kids when they do wrong - but I also believe that after something like the incident this thread is about, after a week or so, if he's making a good effort to get 'back on side' again, he should get some sort of praise/reward for doing things right. Too much negativity and they just start to think 'Why bother even trying to be good?'

  5. I think it was Alex who, in reply to another 'How can I get my car to go faster' thread, said something along the lines of 'A lot of us should be learning how to hit a few more apexes before spending thousands on go faster kit'! Soooooo true.

Maybe if he didn't qualify so well up the field.....but then he always does, and even if he qualifies in (a lowly) 4th, he manages to get to the first corner in 2nd place....but if he didn't then we wouldn't think he's soo good.....then people wouldn't rave about him so much......then everyone would think we've just got another fairly good British racing driver - 'maybe he'll be good enough to win a race someday. When will we ever get a truly GREAT British racing driver?'! But here we are in June and he's never been off the podium. He's leading the World Championship and hasn't made a racing mistake as yet. How about we all stop with the scepticism and moaning - to a large extent you make your own luck in racing, and Lewis does that BIG time - he gets himself near the front early so that he DOESN'T have loads of cars in front of him - you can't criticise him for that - it's what good drivers are supposed to do! Meanwhile the 2-times World Champion was the one yesterday who was making all the mistakes. Get behind Lewis and give him your support. The 'flash in the pan' argument can't last forever - 6 races, 6 podiums - when Schumacher did this sort of thing it was all down to his 'metronomic efficiency' at getting a good job done well - why with Hamilton is it all down to luck and a great car? Maybe, just maybe that 'Great British racing driver' has already arrived. Maybe some people just refuse to see it.

    Ouch! (F1)

    Yeah - we noticed that his feet were visible through the hole in the nose of the tub. The last time I saw that happen was in an Indy race where the front of a car was destroyed in a crash and the driver was killed. The car hit some fencing and although it didn't break, the fence stretched enough for the car to end up punching 2 marshals in the head and both died instantly. Very nasty. Kubica was very lucky there.

  11. 405bhp was only from 2002 - prior to that the LS6 engine in the Z06 had 385bhp. (2001 only as the Z06 was introduced that year) The C5 model was introduced in 1997 and ran to 2004. Incicentally, the Manual 6 speed was standard on the C5 Z06 too, so if you're looking for a Z06, it should be a manual anyway.
  12. If your handling is that poor, get the geometry checked out - often that can be the easiest and cheapest way of sorting out your car. Also make sure your tyres have the correct pressure. It's often best to start with the simple stuff before spending out loads of cash - wrong tyre pressures and geometry can turn a great handling car into a piece of cr@p very easily.
  13. I knew the rider actually. (From a few years ago) He was always nuts about bikes - wasn't actually aware he was racing, but they reckon this was his first TT. My condolences go to his family and those of the spectators involved.

  15. I must admit, I like the look of that Challenger - but I like the Camaro better! But then again, I've always perferred Chev to Dodge anyway. Dodge always seemed to change components on their cars for the strangest of reasons. You'd find for example that a model with aircon would have some really strange differences to one without, like different mid-pipes in the exhaust or different ball joints in the suspension!! Bizarre. Chev (& GM cars in general) were always much more consistant with their parts and hence much easier to identify and source parts correctly first time. However, I'm sure that both of these cars will be great fun whichever you might choose. (And I'll bet they'll handle a whole lot better than the originals, too!) Oh - and on the subject of old cars, I'd still rather drive a 1969 Camaro/Challenger than a 1969 Morris/Austin/Wolsey or whatever! And 'yes', I have had a number of american cars of that era. (And now, the current era - but you can't compare the two any more than you can compare British cars of the same eras) The Supra is still a great car to drive, but I now recognise that there are better cars out there, even if most of them cost more! My Corvette is a better drive for me, but we're still keeping one Supe!

  18. Wouldn't have thought so. I know a lot of people with large boats that mainly run on twin diesel engines. They get laid up for the winter each year - usually for 4 months or more - then run again come the spring. Normally no ill-effects from the fuel lying in the tank over the winter. They usually put something in it to stop some sort of algae type thing forming in the tanks though....
  19. But the import costs can bump the price of a yank car up pretty close to what you'd pay for one here. OR, you could look in Europe for a Eurospec car - then you save the cost of SVA as they don't require it. Importing from the states means you have to pay about 1k to get it here (with insurance), then you have to pay VAT and import duty - can't remember which you pay first, but it goes that you have to pay the first tax (let's say it's the 17.5% VAT) on the value of the car AND the costs of getting it to the UK (yes you have to pay tax on the cost of getting it into the country!) and then the import duty goes on that subtotal - so you end up paying tax on tax! So a car that you find for $30,000 (£15,000) in the states can end up costing you over £21,000 to get it on the road in this country, but with the added hassle of having to go through all the car finding/paying/importing/SVA'ing and registering stuff. It's still worth looking around in this country if you're interested in one. Oh - great write-up Green Peace - you're making me want a C6 now!
  20. Yep - I stumbled upon my 50th anniversary model in a similar way. Haven't regretted buying it for a minute!
  21. Lol at the undertaker thing! I didn't mean that a particular job might be more secure than another really - more that the employment market and the performance of the economy will be taken into consideration by the lender in their decision making process. Obviously in hard times, external economic influences should be given more weight in their decision making, and they'll probably be a bit more careful about who they lend money to and might place more restrictions (like higher deposits) on the mortgages they offer - after all - they want to protect their own interests. Interest only mortgages expose the lender to higher risks in times of uncertainty - they will inevitably try to do whatever they can to reduce that risk.
