  1. PMSL Jake.. What's a brake spanner? Not heard of one before? Sounds like something I should add to my tool box
  2. Ok.. Maybe I was being a bit subtle with the phrase 'some of the US tuners'
  3. I don't want to start a big argument here, but that seems to be the general opinion of some of the US tuners. This is what I mean about the difference in thinking of tuning these cars between the two sides of the pond..
  4. The one thing that has been mentioned is that replacing the stock ECU with a standalone will reveal problems and that all standalones are not perfect in some way or another. The argument there being, don't remove the factory ECU unless you have to remove it, or put up with the problems thereafter. What things can I expect to have to 'put up with' or deal with?
  5. I understand that, from what I understand I'm going to be losing out on a lot of spool and then power and torque further up from not having the ability to alter timing. I'm really leaning towards the Link Plus G3 now, I've read the Link website and it sounds like a very good bit of kit for not a lot of money.. I've just asked Ryan a few more questions by PM, not sure if he'll reply to that or on here, a couple of the questions could be quite handy for other people in the future to read and make a good informed decision on which way to go
  6. No, in all fairness to Dusty he's not tried to sell me anything at all that I haven't asked for, which I like very much. He has in fact told me that the MAP ECU will do fine for my needs, yes that the MAP ECU2 would give timing control and a little more boost but that the original will be fine. I've just worked out costs, I reckon I'm gonna spend about £900 all in for the MAP ECU and mapping, about £1100 all in for the MAP ECU2 and mapping (mapping quotes are quite high so far for this ECU). And a rough price without giving away Ryan's charges etc. are £1300 fitted and mapped for a Link Plus G3, maybe a touch more with boost control (+£40?).
  7. I've had a reply from Dusty with regards this, makes interesting reading. I find the difference of opinion between the UK and the US quite amazing. I've just PM'd him back to see if he minds me quoting his PM in here so we can have a chat about it
  8. Ahh, it is you I'm from St Leonards, was just heading home for some dinner
  9. This is interesting, my diff seems to have more of a 'clonk' on hard acceleration from cruising than when I first got the car. It may just be that I notice it more know as am more in tune with the noises it makes. It is a UK car however, and one of the first things I had to do on it was replace the corroded and very leaky diff cooler (or at least, I have bypassed it for the time being as I don't do speeds anywhere near high enough to warrant it being there).
  10. Strange that some of the dealers still list the PFC on their websites, Thor and Whifbitz still list it.. There's a PFC on eBay for every bloody car other than a Supra
  11. That's a sad story, very scary though. Would have been interesting to know what happened in his past to make him like that.
  12. I stand corrected, or am I just using the wrong term? It was explained to me that there are parts akin to shims in the diff that hold it all tightly together, and that when they wear, you can get a clunk when the slack is taken up in the driveline?
  13. Hmm, thanks for the PM's and that post Ryan, much appreciated! Ignore the PM I just sent you, I saw it before the thread and you've already answered all the questions I asked! What I'm thinking at the moment is to cancel my order of the MAP ECU, harness and the Innovate setup. If I also sell my AVC-R then I'm pretty close to the whole cost of the ECU, harness and your set up costs. Just need to sell the old Pug 405 TD on the driveway and all is sorted It does look like a very good option, I really like that DisplayLink too, very smart. Always an option that can be added later on I suppose. I may go PM Dusty...
  14. Blimey, they don't mess about Is that the one called Aslan you posted pics of a while back?
  15. Sod picking an argument with that!
  16. I'll see what he PM's back. I've seen a lot of threads that he's been involved in and a lot of what people have said, and I have no issues with the guy knowing what he's talking about. Seems like a very handy guy to have on the forum. Thanks for the help Homer
  17. How much slack? Is it thumping when you pull away? This can often be caused by backlash in the diff. Over time the thrust bearings will need overhauling to take the backlash out that happens over time and with use.
  18. Ok, I've PM'd Ryan G so we'll see what he says.. Watch this space I suppose. Dusty's waiting for a couple of parts to come in for my order so changing it shouldn't be too much of a problem within the next week hopefully!
  19. None of the usual suspects seem to list the G3, any ideas where to look for pricing and to get an idea of features etc. Is it a 'Plug-n-Play' type system or will it need hardwiring? I will PM Ryan G as somebody was telling me the other day he was talking about the Link and how much he liked it. I'll see if he knows about the PFC, but I've got a feeling it's specific to the J-spec Supra and that the wiring is different, and of course things like the MAF etc. I don't want to go overboard, but I do want to get it right and not waste my money. Glad I posted this thread up, the advice and pointers are much appreciated guys, thanks
  20. One thing though, just done a bit of digging... My car is a UK manual, it seems PFC is JDM manual only?
  21. Arse.. And I thought I'd done my homework too! In fairness it wasn't mis-sold as such, I didn't ask Dusty the questions as I just read what Jarrett and Jo had written about the MAP. There's such different ideas about tuning between the UK and the US, it makes it quite hard to make decisions sometimes. It's about another £200 for the MAP ECU2 and the harness for that, which starts spiralling costs for a piggyback a bit more than I'd like. PowerFC wise, they're not made any more are they? So I'd have to happen upon a second hand one? Where would I be looking for Link G3?
  22. I believe it was a quote by PHR Matt, can't remember where I read it, quite possibly in PHR's section of the forum. I'm going to be shot down in flames aren't I
  23. Sorry Homer, missed your post! It's a GT60 officially, same turbo as the Stage 1 kit, but as far as I can see it's got a bolt on exhaust flange instead of V-Band. The MAP ECU is $399 and I also got the Fields Harness to go with it, that already has the MAP ECU harness wired in. I've wanted a Fields for a while anyway as there's not much slack in the loom under the dash and it will make wiring in other bits and bobs a lot easier. The whole lot that I ordered came to about £2800 delivered, I'll just have a bit of duty and VAT to pay on it when it comes in to the UK. The Pound is very strong at the moment, which is nice
  24. tDR - I thought it would be good enough for the time being. I was led to believe that timing adjustment really wasn't needed until you're knocking on the door of 600+bhp, which is far more than I'm going to want. To be honest, if I start doing much more to the car, then I'll look at going full stand alone with something like an AEM or Link. Would also like to say that Dusty at MVP has been very helpful with answering all of my little nit-picky questions and has made ordering from the US a totally painless process
  25. Lol.. thanks Pig. I'm hoping not everybody has as bad luck as you fella I've just been reading TLicence's walkthrough on removing the standard twins.. Depressing! I think I may go and buy a 5L tub of PlusGas......
