Don't write off the auto mate, it's a very good box and was well ahead of its' time.

You can fit the 550s to the J spec, you just need a resistor pack to change the impedance but you might be wise to get something to control the fuelling whilst you're there.

If it's been serviced well and kept nicely that could be a good one to go for. Have a look at the FAQ section on here to see what to look out for. Also, you might find if you speak to Sky Insurance you can get a favourable quote on a J spec TT and then you can import your own and get a much better spec. Everyone wants a UK spec but the J spec ones are better really (and faster)

You use a lot of question marks? It's mainly the resale value and the standard of work that people are concerned about? Saying that, resale isn't a big concern these days when you can pick up a TT auto for under £3k ?? Oh, and I'd NEVER buy a car knowing it has been in a crash?. -

Similar power to weight to the ZR1 but better handling (I suspect). I'd say that's a fair assumption.
