  1. That only applies to fueling, which has nothing to do with adjusting to different fuel types. It is advancing the timing that allows more power with higher octane fuels. The stock ECU uses its knock sensors to retard the timing if det is detected. To some extent it will advance the timing to take advantage of higher octane fuel. Most standalones don't use the knock sensors in this way, but then you just map them with the fuel you are going to use. If you want to use race fuel you just have a separate map for that. This is much more effective that relying on the ECUs limited ability to adjust itself based on knock detection.
  2. That was a different thing. There are two types of thread used for oil connections like that. If you have a straight thread (i.e. BSP) you need a dowty seal which is a kind of washer with a rubber bit in the middle. PTFE tape won't seal a thread like that because the threads don't lock together, there will always be a small gap between them. If you have a tapered thread like NPTF you need PTFE to stop oil working its way round the threads.
  3. Cool. Shit music though!

    Bl**dy Kids!!!!

He didn't have a thong on? That is suprising...

    Bl**dy Kids!!!!

I'd rather not know what you got up to with your nuts last week if it's all the same to you...
  6. Why bother though, changing the 2nd cat only takes 10 minutes and is enough to pass an MOT.

No use telling James, he can't read...

    screamer pipe.

The screamer pipe doesn't make any difference when crusing, but a single in general is much louder that the stock setup because of the lack of complicated pipework muffling things. They can also drone more than stock cars too.
  9. 1. Ewen 2. squiffy 3. Ivan 4. SimonB (probably ) Should be able to make this, the car will be back from Owen developments the day before.
  10. You can use whatever filter you like, including standard ones. It's a standard thread.
  11. The odo sends the speed signal to the rest of the car, including the control unit for the power steering. It changes the assistance with speed, so you get more assistance when you are stationary or moving slowly and less as you speed up. So if the odo is not getting a speed signal then your power steering will also think you are stationary and be very light. In theory it shouldn't damage anything if you drive it, but with the steering so light you will have to be very careful. Check the middle plug on the back of the dials. It isn't actually a plug, but is used to join various things together. It sounds like the speed signal that goes into the speedo is not connected to the odo and therefore the rest of the car.

    Track Day

Bet that got your attention, must have been shifting at the end of there!
  13. In the tech manual, it says: Test the supply voltage to the sensor, unplug it and there should be 4.5-5.5v between terminals VCC and E2 of the plug going to it (that's the outer two pins) with the ignition on. The test for the sensor itself I don't think is going to be very useful, because you have to disconnect the hose on the intake chamber side and apply a vacuum to it. You will have to measure the voltage at the ECU or by sticking pins into the cables going to the sensor. At normal atmospheric pressure it is supposed to be 3.3-3.9V. The voltage drop from normal atmospheric pressure when you apply a vacuum is supposed to be: 13.3 kPa 0.3-0.5 V 26.7 kPa 0.7-0.9 V 40 kPa 1.1-1.3 V 53.5 kPa 1.5-1.7 V 66.7 kPa 1.9-2.1 V
  14. Yes, pretty much. It's difficult to say I think because it's difficult to separate out the costs of the single from everything else. It's scary when you add it all up too!
  15. Can't remember, not cheap but not too bad and nice quality too. Sometimes difficult to get one in there wihout a lift though. I've resorted to jacking up the end of a wrench with a spare jack before too.
  16. One of mine was a right PITA last time. Halfords do a nice big 18 inch breaker bar.

Nice one. I might have been able to find that post if the search had been working...

    Track Day

I've definitely got the Bedford GT track down as the next trackday I want to do, it looks great. Much longer than most and there's a great big straight too. Might well be up for it, have to see nearer the time though.

Which would be fine if the bloody search worked. It hasn't worked properly for years. I think the sig pictures are probably the worst thing about it though. You get a 4 page thread and there are only 4 lines of actual post in the whole thing!
  20. Mine make no noise whatsoever, and I haven't had them on for 4 years!
  21. Those are the anti-squeel shims. You are supposed to use new ones, the old ones can get corroded and gunged up and if they are you will get spongy brakes. In any case the brakes feel much better without them so I would leave them off.
  22. Strictly speaking it's not a racetrack. It's a toll road with no speed limit. So your insurance may be valid.
  23. The trouble with a poll like this is what exactly you mean by going single. For some people you just slap on a cheapy turbo, manifold and simple airflow fudger and that's a single setup, doesn't matter if it doesn't really run that well, has a dodgy cold start etc etc. For others it means optimising the potential with cams, a decent turbo, sufficient cooling and more importantly mapping properly with correct ignition timing etc. And there are those who would insist on engine internals etc too. Personally I don't see the point in simply bolting a turbo on, I want it to be drivable every day to and from work, and also survive track days. I also want boost to come in very early, and I want to get the most out of it as possible in terms of optimised fueling and timing. I also need it to be reliable. So I guess I'm at the top end of the second camp above. Also, I fitted mine myself, and sourced all the components myself because none of the kits fitted my requirements exactly. So there were no labour charges for that.
  24. Already been covered in the tech discussions area: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=7592. The uprated ABS is only on the facelift RZ, not the others I believe, but nobody really knows what exactly was uprated about it!
  25. There were no displays, nothing flew all day. It took us just over 5 hours to get there, and I'm only just over 50 miles away! Must say the organisation was pretty poor, they must have known nothing was going to fly quite early but they didn't cancel it until really late. There was bugger all to do there either, and they're going to have to sort the traffic management out for next year or restrict the number of cars more, it was ridiculous.
