  1. Definitely the bearing? Ours did the same and turns out the weight on the bottom of the drum had come loose. Tightened it up with a couple of rubber washers and jobs a good 'un
  2. I will likely look into that as well, Imi. Either way, the MacBook is staying and being used as and when it needs to be.....but, I really want something newer and perhaps better suited for browsing / media playback (hence the original question).
  3. To be honest I don't think there's a need for another laptop. We have Susan's Win7 laptop and as you say I still have the Macbook (albeit I don't really trust it to last and would be backing it up every two minutes now!). It'd be really for browsing and media....my only concern is how an iPad or similar would handle a relatively large media library which is currently held on an external hard drive (i.e. would I have to sync part of it only to the iPad to make use of it?).
  4. Guys Following on from this thread, I'm looking to upgrade / renew the MacBook (it's had six good years and will still be kept, I just can't really rely on it being my only computer anymore). Question is, should I get a new laptop / desktop linked to my tv / a tablet? If I'm honest I pretty much use it for web browsing, tunes and video etc. Very rarely will I edit a photo, video or word document these days and if I do then I'd still have the Macbook / Susan's Win7 laptop. Would a tablet (iPad or Galaxy Tab) work okay for my needs or would it be insufficient for my large itunes library? Basically it boils down to this: iPad / Galaxy Tab - £400 Mac Mini - £650ish with mouse and keyboard New laptop (would stay Mac) - £900 So, what do you guys use and what would you recommend / do differently? Cheers Ian
  5. ...how do you find it, using the tv as a monitor? (if that's what you do)
  6. Perhaps this is why my MacBook seems to disconnect from my Virgin router? Sorry OP, off topic I know.
  7. Hmmmm, may give that a shot. Will that mean another fresh install?
  8. Not TM. Was backed up using Silver Keeper. This should have been selectable using restore within Disk Utility, however the bug I linked to on an earlier post meant I couldn't select the source / destination. I thought migration assistant was only available when using FireWire?
  9. The SSD has now been formatted IMI, with a fresh install of Tiger. I need to try and get the backed up copy of my hd recovered onto it though, which as it turns out isn't possible due to my 'bugged' os install discs.
  10. Right. Have £130 left over from my birthday, so was thinking I could just sod the MacBook which is now approx 6 years old or more and get myself a new Mac Mini to hook up to the tv. Has anyone used one of these with the tv and can provide a bit of feedback? Will of course keep the MacBook, but it'll just be used for a quick browse of the interwebnet when the Mrs is watching Eastenders
  11. Bored now and can't be arsed waiting for pics of a dirty car. Safe journey fellas.
  12. £120?! I don't mind paying a bit more, but I just couldn't justify that. Has anyone used the Klipsch? Got good reviews in CNET.
  13. Giving this a little bump as I have ashamedly still not replaced my old sennheisers. So, what are people using these days? EDIT: looking at the Klipsch S4i's to work with my iPhone 4S
  14. I don't know if I'll be able to use snow leopard as such (that said they don't seem to request a product key?). If you could check the Tiger version it'd be much appreciated. Cheers Ian Edit: actually, I guess I wouldn't actually be using the install as such, just the disk utility?
  15. http://www.shirt-pocket.com/blog/index.php/shadedgrey/comments/intel_mac_dvd_disk_utility_problems/ Looks like this won't be as easy as I first thought Does anyone have an OSX Tiger 10.4.11 disc I can borrow? Alternatively I may just take this as an opportunity to upgrade to Lion?
  16. You guess correct. Currently just creating a disk image of my backup to restore from.....it's not a quick process! Will perhaps need to look into Time Machine if it'll be much easier than this.
  17. Yes, external HD via USB.
  18. I'm having enough of a problem trying to restore from my backed up HD. Used silver keeper and trying to use the restore function in disk utility if anyone has any helpful info?
  19. The fresh install has worked. Just need to figure out how to get my backed up hd onto it. The warranty is three years on the SSD and I'm not even a year into it. May back up often and see how I get on? Don't really want to do another erase (can I test the disk without erasing what's on it?).
  20. An currently attempting an erase and fresh install. Can I ask why you suggested a 7-pass format in particular? Seems to be installing okay and is nearly finished. My problem is if this works, ebuyer won't likely replace it under warranty as in their eyes it's 'in full working order' so to speak?
  21. Tried. Verify disk didn't work either
  22. Looks like it'll be a fresh install and hope I've not lost much since the last back up
  23. Okay, tried disk utility / first aid and came up with the attached. Now what?
  24. Looks like its read only to me (still had Ubuntu open with the SSD mounted). Will have a look at that although am switching between my iPhone and Ubuntu to solve the problem so could take me a while! (don't have a clue what the hell I'm doing in Ubuntu)
  25. That's the one. Is it easy enough to check whether there's a corrupt file in there?
