Heavy Vibration from rear over 25mph (V160 with TRD Diff)
ManwithSupra replied to ManwithSupra's topic in mkiv Technical
Just a Standard Auto LSD. I am not ruling out a Diff issue but after reading so many people mentioning the prop I am probably looking at a Prop issue I had a conversation with Chris Wilson earlier just to go over the issue to which he also said it could be a prop issue, so I am going to send my prop off to see if there is an issue with it and if there is see if it can be rectified. If it does end up being the prop then I will get another one made up in Ali or Carbon and keep the repaired one as a spare. It’s a shame that Toyota don’t sell the Rubber Doughnut separately, I would like to change mine really I don’t like having cracks in things. -

Right going to start enquiring about getting a new custom prop made up (rather than cutting and welding an old one like the one on the car currently) also going to look at getting replacement driveshaft’s, rubber propshaft mount, replacing the rear hub bearings and maybe look at a replacement Diff if changing the other things does not work. Anyone have any suggestions on custom prop manufactures? So far I have heard Bailey Morris are pretty good? -
I went to this but didnt see you mate, where were you parked up?

Will need to find out from Ryan, I may get a lightweight one made up anyway. May as well if it's all coming off lol -

Cheers guys, the only issue is the prop I have has been shortened so the only way really to check the prop is to get another one made up. I am guessing if that is something it could be then I may as well get it done and get it out of the way lol. Perhaps I Should get custom one made up instead of chopping up a old propshaft... I was reading Jamie P had one made up or was looking to get one made up by a UK company for his Supra. -

I Suppose the best thing to do would be do start dismantle it and check as I go working from back to front until I get to the issue. Any suggestions though would be great -

Hi All, Ok I have checked for wheel bearing play, seems fine, no missing wheel nuts, wheel studs are all present as well as wheel nuts, wheels are not warped or damaged, tyres are in good condition with no bulges, Drive shafts "look" fine, Rear suspension components are all fine.. Right onto the things I have found I seem to have sprung a small diff Oil leak on left hand side of the diff (as you look down the car from the back) I looked for where it could be coming from and quite honestly I am baffeled as the Driveshafts seals seem dry. I have also found that I still have a leak on the transmission main output shaft seal as there is fluid on the flat floor (its not the selector shaft seal as I replaced that before the track day). My main concern is the gearbox, prop and diff Please watch the following video. [video=youtube;qH-ClhIj__8]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH-ClhIj__8&feature=youtu.be As you can see there is movement on the prop in the center bearing. I am not sure if thats usual or not? As the speed increases you can feel the same freqency vibration on the body work as you can see the shaft shaking in its bearing. I did try it in 4th gear idle but it started shaking so badly I felt it unsafe to carry on. Now I have not got an idea what this could be, Bent Propshaft, A Gearbox output shaft issue, a Diff issue (as also i seem to have a new diff oil leak now) I have also noticed that the companion flange on the gearbox seems to have a kink in it?? I also noticed that the Rubber doughnut has some cracks/splits in it (at least 1 split around each nut)... Would this be the cause of the Vibration.. To be honest I am a bit stumped. -
Hi All, More of a passing question, does anyone know of a kit to increase the steering rack ratio for the Supra? I could not see anyone that does one on a quick search but some people may know. I am not saying that I need one (yet) but it would be good to know in case I want to explore it at a later date.

Spent a few moments last night having a look at the DL1 datalogger data from the trackday. Really impressive bit of software this, so many things it can do. Going to spend some time learning how to use it properly but I am getting the idea slowly. Quick screenshot -

Some videos of my recent day at goodwood... Had a problem with the car on the way home, not sure if the Diff, Driveshaft, Wheel bearing failed but got lots of Violent Vibration going over 25 mph so much so it was impossible to drive so had to get it recovered. Will be doing a strip down this weekend to find what the issue is as well as checking everything else too. Still its all part of the fun Was a great track day though... still buzzing now! -

Cheers mate, Yeah it is quick could do with being a little quicker though Yeah the track is lovely, its a very fast flowing smooth track and it has a nice open feeling about it. It has some tricky off camber corners which makes it fun (not that you notice too much in the video) The marshalls, instructors and orgainsers are really open and freindly and you get as much tea and cake as you want included on the day Yeah its pretty planted in the corners and I know it will go faster through them, I am slowly getting there the way the car handles with the current suspension setup inspires so much confidence and even when you do lose traction its now so forgiving. I didnt make too many changes during the day as the space in the paddock for doing work is not particulary big so the only adjustments were to the compression and rebound (Fast/slow) settings. Even so I managed to better my best time there (Of the laps I Ran the Datalogger on) hopefully once I get the car sorted I will get back out there again and see if I can push it a bit more -
Helper Springs are there to stop the main spring from bouncing around in their seats when going over bumps etc. They are not very stiff and will be fully compressed when the weight of the car is on them. Adjust the preload ring as required and then set the height with the bottom mount. Preloading the spring is part of corner weighting; unless you have car scales then you are not going to be able to do it properly. That said corner weighting a road car is not that necessary.

Heavy Vibration from rear over 25mph (V160 with TRD Diff)
ManwithSupra replied to ManwithSupra's topic in mkiv Technical
cheers guys I have not had a look at the car as yet, I was so tired from getting back from the day I just popped it in my workshop and went home lol. I have experienced unbalanced wheels before but nothing on the scale of vibration I was getting this time. It also may be worth noting it was not a high speed/pitch vibration but a slower deeper more mechanical rotating vibration which i suppose could be a major wheel bearing failure or something other than the diff. I will still check to see if the weights are there to tick it off the list. So things to check so far... Wheel Play Wheel Weights Wheel Nuts and Studs (I did check to see if they were all present) Tyre Condition (should be ok as they are fairly new but still). Drive Shafts PropShaft All rear suspension components -
As some of you may have seen on the Track day thread that my car has suffered from some major violent vibration from the rear of the car on the way back from my recent track day:(. I just wanted to see peoples suggestions on what it may be before I start ripping the reat all down. Basically the car is fine up to around 25mph after that the rear starts to vibrate loudly and it shakes the car quite badly. Now from what I can tell there is no crunching sound coming from the car that I can remember (I pulled over very quickly and then got it recovered) So the only things I can think of it being would be either the diff or a drive shaft issue. Has anyone had anything like this before, if so what were your findings? I will be having a look at it this weekend and it maybe plainly obvious what has failed but it would be good to check what other people have had so if its not obvious then I can eliminate these first …. I.e. cheating

He wasnt sick but came very close to it. Poor lad, I felt really bad lol -

Hi All, Back from an amazing day at goodwood In total there must have been no more than 15 cars there in the morning and there were only at least 5 cars running (myself included) in the afternoon. This meant I had loads of track time and loads of room - Mental. I have taken pictures and videos of the day but have not had the chance to upload them all yet. This is because on the way home my Diff decided to give up lol I mean it could be the diff or it could be a drive shaft either way I had a very violent vibration when going over 25mph so I decided to get recovered back to my workshop. Didnt get back home until 8pm and by the time I had something to eat etc just wanted to get to bed. Even so it still looks good on a flatbed https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/426711_468465069894808_1718420163_n.jpg I did check the camera footage before I went to bed to which I can tell you now is 100 times better then before. Especailly the helmet camera. This morning I set it to upload to youtube and its only done 1 for now so here it is...(oh watch it in HD and make sure you have sound ) Outing lap was a little more sedate as I like to make sure all the oils, tyres etc are up to temp before I start hammering it. Even so I bettered my best time on this video so I am pretty happy with that, felt sorry for my passenger though, I couldnt hear him saying he felt sick nearing the end of the video, when I did realise (as you will see he gestures vomit will come out) the poor guy was as white as the car. I will update this thread with pics and videos once they are all uploaded. -

I will be back out on track tomorrow I managed to take advanatge of a great deal at goodwood for the whole day I have adjusted the camera mount location in the car (for a better view) and also now have a helmet cam so you can see my POV New In car mount location. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/279398_464829523591696_1691335304_o.jpg Helmet cam https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/967044_467778403296808_48344984_o.jpg Weather looks good as well -

Ah yeah I did a search for SRP and found out its called SRF it seems others made the mistakes too hehe Yeah if you are doing loads of driving and supporting family in distressing times that’s not only physically tiring but emotionally as well. -

Cool, I have ordered the Disc temp paint and will use both together (may as well keep them now I have them) I will have a look at SRP fluid as well. Yeah it’s getting more and more expensive with the rising cost of tyres and fuel and there is less and less time available these days also it seems. I do know what you mean about the effort expended with loading cars, servicing etc. etc. it would be a nightmare if you were doing it on your own, Luckily a couple of close mates are pretty enthusiastic about track days, racing and always lend a hand which splits the workload up a bit which makes it a bit more manageable. -

Thanks chris, thats useful to know. I was looking at the temp paint that AP do but was put off by the price so thought I would give these a go. If its a better way of monitoring then I will use the paint instead Cheers for the link for your special offer (bookmarked) Yeah getting well into it now I find it really interesting and really enjoyable and thats not just getting out on track but all the work that goes in setting the car up etc, its a lot of work but when you can feel the difference its really worth it
