Asked Getrag about the V160 replacement. This is what they told me. (look inside)

A couple of days ago i emailed getrag about the V160 and esso oil that have been discontinued. This is the email i got from them:

Hallo Mr. Falzon,

as replacement for the Esso ATF 21065 you can use a ATF Dexron 2 or 3 from Shell, AGiP, BP Castroll or any other supplier you can get.

Alternative to the ATF oil you can use a manual transmissions oil 75W 90 GL3. If you use this you will have maybe a little bit higher shiftforces at cold conditions.

That 'special' V160 oil is no more than a standard ATF??

No surprise there. The only oil not to use is Redline MTL. For some reason this knackers a bearing or seal.

Royal Purple is supposed to be the best.... according to those 'in the know'

to be honest i've allways thought this of the "special" auto trans fluid as well, a gearbox and oil seals are not rocket science, good find fella this seems really obvious to contact the manufacturer now you've done it

Also CW reccomends an oil from Bmw, hope he will be along soon so we can all the oils in this one thread.

V160 - If we can test this stuff and match it I am sure we can supply a cross matched oil for a lot less but I need a sample of it.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. BMW, Maserati and GM all use versions of the same Gatrag box, all have their "own" oil for it. Analysis below, easisest to find is the BMW oil called MTF-LT-1

Having had discussions with the Fuchs/Silkolene technical bods, this is in fact a Dexron II product (not Dexron III although Dexron III is supposed to be backwardly compatible)

 

The product we would recommend that you use is Fuchs/Silkolene Titan ATF3000 (Dexron II).

The Fuchs Titan ATF 4000 is a better quality product although not a DII but a DIII.

Still a bit confused about this.. got the BMW stuff and its more like gearoil not ATF so not sure which is best to go for??

Well according to chris wilson you can use the BMW oil. I posted the answer from the enginner from getrag as it was the only choice i had to get a definite answer as to what oil to use. Maybe you can ask chris wilson about the BMW oil.

The syncromax goes real well with your boxes, its basically a ATF but with a better film strength so it is thinner than GB oils but give same/better protection

Got any proof? Sorry with 10 posts only I don't recognise your name and so I don't know why I should take your advice!

Not being an arse just would like more clarification on your technical knowledge and why you say it's good for our boxes...thus indicating you are A) not an owner and B) going by a 3rd party experience.

Just an update on this from a little research.

MTF-LT-1 is the fluid specified for Getrag 6 speed found in E39 540i and E39 M5.

Esso/Exxon MTF-LT-1 BMW P/N 83 22 9 408 942

MTF-LT-2 Fluid BMW P/N 83 22 0 309 031

BMW Service Engineering info - From model year 2004 some manual transmissions are filled with Castro "MTF-LT-2" lifetime fluid. This fluid has the same properties as the "MTF-LT-1" fluid indicated above in section D. The "MTF-LT-1" fluid may be mixed and/or substituted for the "MTF-LT-2" manual transmission fluid.

So basically any of the above should do as they are backwards compatable, I also remember reading on a beemer forum that Some M owners reported less notchiness when going to LT-2

Guys I have thought this for ages....people rave on saying this is the only stuff to use, grave danger if you use anything else. The way you need to look at it is that at the time supras were developed and made, oils and lubricants were very different to todays modern synthetics, over the past 13/14 years im sure oil companies have developed superior products which are more that suitible to use in older style gearbox's, diffs etc etc over and above what was around 13 years ago

These forums make me laugh sometimes you really have to take everything with a pinch of salt with what people recommened as most seem to take it as gospel when typed out.

my supra's are serviced with rock oil, £4 per litre and superior to dextron 2 & 3 as appose to toyotas near £30 per litre.

I totally agreed with the taken as gospel comment. One reason why I started the thread http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=140375. It is good to hear from members who have used non OME products with out issue.

The only other issue that goes along with your comment about oil development over time is, are the 15year old seals compatable with more modern equivalents? I dont want to slavishling stick to Toyotas own product, I just want an oil that works and possibly makes the box even better.

As I'm going to be replacing my gearbox oil very soon....and have done so with V160 in the past with no problems...what is the definitive gearbox oil to use for my6speed, regardless of cost, this thread has confused me even more:search:
